So I get cold easy and asking Santa for some good midlayer stuff.
My question is, merino goes agains the skin but do I add another layer of merino on top of that or can I put spandex or does it matter?

Also what blocks the wind best?

ive tried lots of layering choices over the years and for me i stay warmest with a wool base layer, light down down jacket as a mid layer and a soft quiet outer layer which is either a fleece pullover or hunting parka if its severe cold. i walk to my spot in just the wool and add the other layers when i get to my spot.

in my experience wool does not block wind. my down layer does. you could wear a rain jacket as a mid layer to block wind as well.

My system is similar regardless if I am sitting in a treestand in the south or hiking up a mountain out west.

- Base layer - merino wool
- Insulating layer - fleece, down, or heavier merino depending on conditions and activity level.
- Outer layer - protection from wind, rain, or snow.

One other caveat I learned years ago from an old head mountain man - avoid cotton.

And don't forget to look on eBay for Merino pullovers, quarter zips, and sweaters. I've found tons of stuff for a fraction of the cost of "hunting" stuff...and most of it is heavier than the hunting stuff. If it's a base/mid layer...who cares what color it is...I don't.
This is what I've been doing, I agree I don't care about the color.

It won't help you this year, but for cold weather my outer layer is Nomad Conifer bibs and jacket. They are 50% off on Black Friday. So $125 for bibs and $125 for the jacket. I've been wildly impressed with mine. Super warm to not be any heavier than they are and cut the wind very well. I also love the pocket layout.

I am a big fan of the Kuiu Axis Hybrid jacket. It's not cheap but has served me well. I often think buy once/cry one. I am indifferent to color and deals can be found on Kuiu's outlet section. A non camo jacket also serves other purposes than just a hunting item. Also can pick up decent deals through the Rokslide forum. The jacket has served me well it conditions all over and is easily packable.

I wear the first lite furnace set for the base layer, midweight pants (KUIU attack, badlands task, or some no name light insulated pair) and then when on stand Sitka stratus bibs. If it's really cold I'll wear the status pants under the bibs. Up top the other weekend when it was 30 on the top I had the furnace, a Sitka piece (grinder 1/4 zip I think) and a fleece pullover I bought on sale last year from natural gear. It's wind proof and the first time I've used it. Had my stratus jacket but never put it on. Looks like they're sold out now but this is it.

I hate wearing bulky coats or parkas. For an outer layer, I prefer a lighter uninsulated, but wind proof shell. The outer shell can be worn in both mild or extreme temps, it's the layers underneath that are added or removed to match the conditions.

Check out Ullfrotte if you don't mind splurging on quality merino garments. I was given a top almost 20 years ago by a friend from Sweden, and it has served me very well. I have other layers of several different weights I've picked up over the years. First Lite brand is good, but still kinda expensive. I've bought several pieces from Midway that weren't as costly, but work just the same.
