I did a lot of patterning one year that I got a new choke. I settled on 2 1/4 ounce load of lead 6's. The first bird that year came through a thicket and was 10 yards before I could see him... I missed. The second bird came down the edge of a field and I could see him all the way. I decided to not let him get too close. When I shot he was 35 steps and I guess I shot low because he fell but got up and flew before I could get to him. I had a pile of feathers but no turkey. That was spring 2007 and the next day it turned COLD!
Learned 2 things that year. First, if a gun doesn't shoot where I'm looking, ditch it instead of using sights as a crutch because apparently I can only see them when shooting paper. Second, inside of 40 a wow pattern is not needed.
The next year I used a H&R single shot with 1 1/2 ounce of lead 5's at 1400 fps and ain't looked back. Only exception is I like to use my M2 20 with hevi 7's in the fall. Both guns with a standard full choke.
