Leader question

My buddy is gonna order a 5X leader.
I ASSUMED all 5X were the same test.
I see it in a bunch of sizes from 4 to 10.

What does the 5X actually mean?

Some of the differences in the breaking strength are marketing, but some represent improved formulas and materials in the leader manufacturing. For example, Rio has come out with a leader and tippet that is 20% stronger than their normal leader/tippet of the same diameter. They are a little more expensive than their standard leader, but have fished well for me.
