Long term reliability

Reconyx and BuckeyeCam are unquestionably the most reliable cameras with the most features. My two complaints about them are the quality of their images (OK but not great) and their cost. Ouch!

Bryan, do you have one of the Reconyx Hyperfires?

I have one that I got for Christmas (a year ago). I started using it in August and quit using it about mid January. You know how these Reconyx's take pics...thousands upon thousands. I bet I got over 10,000 pics during that time period. And I dont know if it were the lithium batteries that camera takes or I'm looking at it wrong, but it STILL says "99% lithium" battery. Thats the first time I have ever used lithium batteries on any of my cams. If it is true to what it says, I will be getting all lithium batteries for all my cams. Also, I'm sure you will be happy on that aspect if it performs like mine has. I just didnt know if you had the same experience with this cam or not. Also, I didnt know lithium made THAT much of a difference, but I do now.

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but from a performance standpoint, these things are about as bad as you can get. You just have to pay for them

When I used lithium AAs in my homebrews, I got about 8 times the longevity of a standard AA battery.

Lithium batteries are the way to go. The RecoynX cameras may still read 99% a year later. It's still best to replace them yearly because once they drop off 99% they drop fast. A couple of days apart they may read from 99% to 65% to 30%. Still a bargain batterywise.

If you want to read and study all the commercial cams ,both new ones and some that have been around a while Go to Chasin Game .com,All these guys do are test trailcams....They will give you a honest unbiased opinion of every cam. out there.
But you will not hear a bad word about a homebrew, we are in a class by ourselves,No comm. cam can compare to a good homebrew ,
And a good builder ...such as Fireman Jim will guarantee that thing as long as you have it.He has fixed cams that he did not even build,I have found the homebrew community to be very helpful and generous, and very willing to help a guy out.
As far as battery life ,I will charge the rechargeables in the camera ..but I have yet to have a external go bad.And all I use are ray-o-vac.

But if you are looking for trigger speed ,nothing can touch a Cuddee...if you can keep them running.

I have 1,000s of pics that says you are mistaken.
2 moultries that just went through their 4th year.
No i dont leave them out all year, cause its over an hour away.Cannt make that trip every few weeks.
For 6 months out of the year mine work perfect.
They may crap out tomorrow but i got my $50 worth.

You're the exception, not the rule.

I got 3 years out of a Moultrie and considered myself lucky. It bit the bullet two days ago.

Bit the bullet/What do you mean?

Now that I have the Truth 35's in for next year I'll see how they hold up. Chasingame is an awesome site and I check it every time I plan a new camera purchase. Problem is they don't have a long-term comparison.I have decided if I get two full years out of a sub-100.00 camera I should consider myself pretty lucky.
