I'm in it…

I've got the trad bow fever…without an adult bow. I've got several that my daughter shoots (she's 5 and slinging arrows already) and 5 more "youth bows" progressing up from her little fiberglass bow.

I'm lookin at takin the leap on one for me. From my countless hours on YouTube, like a lot of things, this style of hunting has a million different opinions and suggestions. What say you?

I'm looking for something that I can target shoot with her and hunt with.

Oh ya….I'm on a full time taxidermist budget. My "Back off Suckas" days are over for a while?

I hunted a long time with a recurve.
My best advice, especially in the beginning, is go lighter than you think on the pull weight.
I wouldn't recommend anything more than 45lbs to anyone starting out. You'll enjoy it more and more likely to develop good form. It's plenty to kill deer with.
Also, longer is better. I'm 5"10 and shot 62" bows the easiest. Very forgiving and finger pinch at full draw wasn't bad.
 
welcome to the world of the struggle stick where confidence is mauled, egos are thrashed, and all semblance of self respect you once had will die a slow painful death…and somehow all of that will be the most enjoyable thing you've ever done!! I know I'm biased but there's some thing so pure and instinctual about traditional archery it just seems to resonate with my soul so I hope you draw the same enjoyment from it that I do. Now there are a couple good starting point to keep in mind. First like stated above longer bows are more forgiving than shorter bows, generally speaking. You don't need near as much poundage as you think for target shooting or hunting because the "magic" is in the arrow tune. Generally speaking 30-40lb is plenty of weight. Now you will hear a lot of people say a longbow is more forgiving than a recurve and in my experience I have not found that to be a universal truth. I find they are very much a personal preference for your style of shooting. With your budget I would look at getting a Black Hunter off of amazon. With this model you could purchase longbow limbs or recurve limbs in different poundage's and use the same riser. And the black hunter is a heck of a value! My best "advice" on shooting is just have fun and don't over complicate it!!

Pictures don't show much, but this is it, ready to shoot. I'm not going out of town this weekend, so if you wanted to shoot it first, that'd be no problem.

Likewise buddy. Y'all never cease to amaze. Less than 24 hrs and I had a beautiful bow in my hand and was slingin arrows all afternoon. Thanks again Buzzard Breath.

Same as most people that use a bow. A bunch of posts about lousy hits and "Hey, does anybody have a dog?"

I'd spend time with her with archery. But archery is a target sport, not for wounding deer and watching them run off to die. She won't like that.

For hunting I'd keep spending time with her training with rifles.

Morning…didn't know what hand to hold the bow with
Afternoon…shooting arrows hiiiigh in the air, over the garden, 100% by herself
The look on her face was priceless. It's all she can talk about.

Her rifle of choice now is a Red Ryder. I've got her on the 1980's path of progression.
