I just went with a Skinner Peep Sight for my Henry Big Boy 44 mag. All I need for hunting in the thick stuff.

If it is for a .45-70 a fixed 2.5x20 or 1-4x20 is plenty.

For .30-30 or .35 Remington 1-4x20 up to 2x7x33.

Leupold FX for the fixed power and their VX-Freedom line are all good. They tend to have the lightest weight and shortest length and best eye relief vs their competition. And good glass. All for about $300.
