When you are trying to strike a bird later in the morning or afternoon, what do you use?
Do you use a locator call, such as a crow or woodpecker or do you just yelp?

I have had better luck with a good yelp myself.

I'm not either.
When I first started turkey hunting I bought an owl hooter, crow call and a woodpecker call.
Never had one answer any of them except for the owl call but quickly learned in the early mornings if you will just wait they will gobble on their own or a natural owl might set one off. :D

Exactly how I roll too. Good luck in the woods, and know that us working are envious beyond belief. LOL :tu:

I like a crow call. Most of the times I can get one to answer to it. IF they are gobbling that day. Never used a woodpecker call and a owl a couple times and never had any luck.

Turkey call. I don't own or carry a locator and loathe their very existence

I use my go to dawkins and usually start with a 5-7 note yelp with normal volume. I always do two sequences. It seems a lot of birds won't hit back on the first but will nail the second sequence. Almost as if the first gets his attention and the second makes him sound off.

If that doesn't work and I'm in an area I'm pretty dang sure a bird is I'll cut just a little to try and rip a gobble out of one

don't cackle, turkeys don't cackle much and it sounds incredibly unnatural

I tried to cackle a couple times. "incredibly unnatural" is putting what I did very nicely. :D

Well actually I am at work..... for now.... ;)

I have had better luck locating mid day gobblers by aggressively cutting when they wouldn't gobble at anything else. Gobbling also works but I wouldn't try it on public land

The only time I ever used a locator call was right after sunrise. I used to carry an owl hooter but you can mouth call as good as the commercial call so why carry something you don't need.

Crow call for mid day. You just got to know how to use them!

If you are using a turkey call, be prepared to hit the deck. Just in case he's that close. You can get caught in a bad position if you're just strolling along throwing out turkey calls.

Totally agree, thus why you should never call while you are out in the open. Have your mask on and be in position to hit the deck quickly and get your gun up. With that said, I have had TONS more birds fire off at a distance over the years, than close by under, say under 80 yards or so. YMMV

Locator calls actually serve a very good purpose:

You can use those sounds to keep track of all the googans around you :tu:

But I have to admit,
I've many times thought a real owl was a googan.

Exactly.
And right now, almost everywhere is "out in the open" until we have a little more green-up.
Need to be in a hunting position before you call now, imo.

I never make a call without being close to something to set up against. I also don't blindly call in wide open areas where I can get stuck. That said it seems to happen from time to time that I get pinned down.

Same here. I hit them with some sharp cuts on a box call. That old box call seems to have a little better reach than others
