Missed again

Remind me not to shoot one in full strut again

I did it ONCE when I first started. Lost the bird. It is a foolish shot.

This is the problem in my opinion. I done it once too and he dropped but took off running before I could get to him. I got another shot and killed him though. I'll never do it again.

Did the siren or airhorn make one gobble yesterday? Tried to help a brother out. ; )

Catman, you know your limits and what your capable of and to be a relatively new hunter you have lots of good experience.

I think patterning shotguns is extremely over rated. People killed them with 2-3/4 inch lead number 6s forever with built in modified chokes. Which you were limited to 25-30 yards but it still killed them. I killed many gobblers with this setup. I now know that 3" or 3-1/2" is better because of the bigger payload.

I may be sinning here, I know lots of you like the Winchester Supremes aka double x, but I have always had very bad experiences with them. Out of all the shells I have tried they are number 2 worse, with the Remington Nitros being the all out worse. It usually isn't the shells fault anyways.

I keep saying it, and Ill keep saying it. Get a scope of some kind on that gun. Red dot, standard optic, fast fire, whatever. You owe it to the bird to make good clean kills. I think from your description you missed clean on this bird though.

no way will I ever put a scope on my gun, or a sight that uses batteries. I think REN recommended me some open sights that will get it lined up right every time. You're right I do owe it to the bird to make the best shot. I let a strutter walk this morning because he was following a hen in some real thick stuff and the only open shot had a strand of wire fence across his head. If I shoot one its gonna be close and the birds head is going to be up.....

I also know that you like to dove hunt and everything with your same shotgun, so a scope would get aggravating to take on and off. Now if it is a pure turkey gun scopes do work wonders. If you went the scope route, get a cheap BSA or Tru-glo red/green dot with zero magnification.

Also, I always say don't blame it on the shells, but hevi-shot and HTL loads really do work better. They really 100% do. Worth a try.

5 times in two years is a lot of missing for a shotgun inside 40 yds. Might be time to try something different

Yeah something is in the air, I keep missing with these double x shells c

Ruger I meant to put this in the long beards forum if you can move it

there's your problem. You need Longbeard XR then you can shoot them at 70-80 yds... be even cooler, if you listen to Poser and shot one at 70 yds with Longbeard XR, sitting on a Yeti, wearing Costas...

Keep your head up it happens, at least you are out there and seeing them, those are the important things.
