Mississippi's Turkey Regs

If you think about it, what Mississippi does with the turkey regs is a real boon to juvenile hunters, as only they can shoot jakes.

Juveniles have the benefit of both more longbeards (since adults not shooting jakes allows for more older birds) and the option of taking the jakes the adults cannot.

Not to mention, with more older Toms in the population, better breeding/nesting success is facilitated, resulting in more turkeys period.

I certainly have no criticism for how they're managing their turkey regs in Mississippi. The kids love it. :)
I will have to agree!

This Saturday my 6 y/o may get his first chance....

Almost 2 straight weeks of 70s and 80s daytime temps really have the birds fired up.

And, yes, if a jake comes running to the call and gets within 20 yards, I'm giving him the green light :)

I have never turkey hunted in MS but I like the regs! Nothing wrong with #2 shot. I always used it in TN before it was banned and if it was legal, I would use it again.

I don't feel one iota safer while turkey hunting since the ban of #2 shot than I did before the ban. Besides, the new hevi-shot is supposed to out preform large lead shot on distance and knock down energy. JMHO

That explains a lot. I once asked a area manager about this and he gave me a long winded answer that I can best sum up with "don't ask, don't tell."

There are many things about hunting and fishing in MS that I loved. But, one thing the TWRA has that the MDWFP does not is a clear divide between the state legislature and the department of wildlife.

With regards to this, I believe the way the TWRA is structured administratively is much better than the MDWFP.

I like the turkey regs in MS. I'm taking my boy on the juvenile hunt down there this weekend. I wish we could buy resident sportsman license here for $32 like MS residents can. They might stick it to the non residents, but they take care of their own.
o

I agree with that, my stepfather owns 44 acres in ms but it would have cost $750 for me and my wife to hunt on it for the season, no way I could do that, sad too cause it had a lot of turkey and deer sign
