Had a amazing day trolling the boards on the Chickamauga today with the refuge opening up yesterday. After years and years of trying I finally caught my 3lb crappie today. Just dropped him off at the taxidermist. Weighing in right at 3.1 at 17 and 3/4 inches. We were beginning to worry with the wind at the beginning. Catching this monster and 7 other good ones we picked up and moved to get out of the wind where we finished the rest of our 30 limit. It's crazy the first spot they hammered a solid black Charlie Brewer slider at 7ft deep on a 1/16 head and quarter mile away all they wanted was a cotton candy at 2ft deep on a 1/24 head. Great start of our season. I love slab season.

Before the freeze we were catching them pretty good on the Chik. I had my first 3 ib er to the boat but it got off lifting it. Using a net next time
 
Congrats on a nice string and a nice fish. I caught one a couple years ago and wish I had mounted it but didn't. Tasted good though. :lol:
 
Wow that is a SLAB!!

I'm sort of new to Crappie fishing so I'm curious as to how you found them so shallow? I thought the water has to warm up quite a bit more before that happens. Last year I got into them pretty a good in later March when the water was above 50 degrees. This was in JPP.

Knowing your water is the most important. Alot of people think that about thinking it has to warm up to catch them shallow. Water temps are higher in shallower water. Just because I caught them at 2ft doesn't mean it was 2ft of water. It was 4-5ft deep in the second cove but crappie's eyes being on top they feed upwards. So I changed to that depth. They'll be smaller fish in the shallower water right now but they'll be there. The first cove 8-10ft was 39 degrees. The second 4-5 was 44.8 degrees. Maybe that might make sense.
 
Think you and Dawson must have money burning a hole in your pockets his buck would of made a good set of rattling horns and that crappie would of made some big filets 'Just saying lol
 
Very nice fish! Did you catch blacks at the first hole and whites at the second hole or were they mixed?
