Let me first say that every turkey I have ever shot at with this gun, I have killed....Well, except for one, but that was shooting through some leaves.

Anyways, when I shoot a 3 1/2" turkey load through it, the recoil makes it "pump" itself. Everytime I shoot a 3 1/2" shell out of it, it will chocolate chip cookie back almost to where the shell gets ejected, but its still sitting in there. It wont do that with a 2 3/4" or a 3" shell, so it has to be the force of the recoil from a 3 1/2". I didnt know it did it until I shot it out of a vice 2 weeks ago while patterning it for turkey. I always thought it came back from me holding on to it and my hand was pulling it back. But after shooting it on the vice without me touching it, I know its the gun itself.

As long as it doesnt open any sooner, there shouldnt be a problem :/ . But I'd like to get it checked out to know its safe. Anyone else seen this out of a pump 835?

i have heard of some pumps doing it shooting Nitros and my old 870 did it every once and a while but i always thought it was me holding it and the recoil together.

I would almost say it is somewhat common in pumps and heavy loads but not sure.

you can always just shoot 3" if it really bothers you.

My 835 occassionally does it. But hey, I am unloading my gun any way because the bird is out there flopping and i need to run and get him :D

I had an 835 years ago that would hang the spent shell and kick the new one out of the bottom at the same time. My dad also had one that did the very same thing. They shot good but if you needed a follow up shot you where in trouble. They both have new owners now LOL

Thanks guys. It really doesnt bother me at all. I'm just more of the "preventative" type guy. REN, I thought it was me holding it too, until the vice and I didnt touch it. It actually came farther back than when I did hold it.

As long as it is "more common" than I realized, I'm ok with it. I just didnt know how common it was.

Even though a 3" would work almost the same, I'm also one of those "Go big or Go home" type guys :D

My Winchester does it too with 3" shells. Im not positive but I think most pumps are supposed to do it. Like a follow up assist. Fire a shot and just slam it back with another round. I could be wrong though. If that is the case it wont work like its supposed to if the empty hull is hung in the ejection port.

My 835 does it as well with 3 1/2" shells.
Never a problem until you forget to pull back on it and fully eject the shell and go forward before doing so.

Pretty common from what I understand.

Mine does the exact same thing. Your 835 is fine. I have had mine now about 13 yrs or so.

Good stuff guys. I never really worried about it. As long as it stayed closed until after I shot, I didnt care. With 3 1/2" shells, I have shot that gun probably 6 times and killed 5 toms. I thought it was me. Good to know its a common occurrence.

I am thinking about gettin this thing camo'd up and putting a scope on it and making it a true turkey-only gun. Just didnt wanna spend all that money on a gun I knew did that.

You take any pump and fire it without your hand to hold the forearm shut and it will do the exact same thing once fired.

Well, now that I know the gun is perfectly alright, I just ordered me some scope mounts. I have had a 2X7 Nikon scope just layin around for 4 years now. I'm going to supe this ole Mossberg up to make it the ultimate turkey killing machine :) . Next years purchase will be dipping the gun in camo or some other type means to get it "camo'd" up
