Muzzleloader powders I've used. Good and bad.

Just wondered if anybody has tried different powders, like I have over the years. I started out with Pyrodex RS, because everyone said, "don't use black, you don't want that dirty stuff". Ok, so I used Crapodex. Was not impressed at all. Hangfires, drew moisture and just crap. I next used Goex Ffg. Worked great, and lasts pretty much forever. If it gets wet just dry it. Pyrodex if it gets wet, will never be any good even after it dries out. I even tried a crappy powder called Black Canyon. Oh man. What a waste of money and time. Blackhorn 209 is just too damn expensive. Period.
 
Pyrodex performed well for me with my old investarms carbine and even with my TC black diamond. I switched to triple 7 at some point, then got an accura. Only used triple 7 in the accura, bought my wife an accura mr, and use triple 7 in it as well. I bought some blackhorn back when it was reasonable and never tried it.
 
Used Pyrodex in years past. Use Triple 7 now. Pleased with performance. But once this jug runs out Ill likely try Blackhorn 209. Yes its expensive but per shot over the long run it isnt terrible because I dont shoot that often. Few shots to confirm zero annually then to hunt...so a jug will last years.
 
Shot Pyrodex for years in powder form and then pellets. Made the switch to Blackhorn several years ago. It is expensive but works great. I guess it's equivalent to shooting tss for turkey. I believe the only thing that could be better would be to go smokeless.

Right- in the big picture, it's not much money at all to shoot 5-10 shots of BH 209.
I'd imagine it would only be $15 or so?
 
I don't intend to hijack. The BH209 is the best I've used. I swapped to it after a misfire with Pyrodex pellets cost me a really nice 10pt buck on the afternoon of Nov 14 at 3:16pm.

The best all around that l've used has to be Triple 7. But, Goex black was pretty good too. It always fired and cleaned up just fine. I always heard it was a fluffy kitten to clean. But, I didn't see that.
 
Started with the old nasty pyrodex, used triple 7 for years, switched to bh209 when first came out and haven't looked back! I have enough bought at walmart closeout and small mom n pop shops at ridiculously low prices to last a lifetime!!
 
I shot triple 7, white hits and black horn. White hot pellets were pretty nice and cleaned up great. Black horn is superior but if I couldn't find any I'd switch back to white hot pellets no problem
 
Started with Pyrodex RS. Horrible stuff but was mainstream at the time. Switched to 777 powder in 2002 and it was incredible. I tried Blackhorn 209 and did not see what the fuss was all about. It does not prevent corrosion and doesn't clean up as easy as 777. I went back to 777 when I'm not shooting a smokeless muzzleloader.
 
Triple 7 is my favorite all around powder. Goex black is dirty but, I didn't notice it being any worse than Pyrodex, and a lot easier to ignite. I think that Hodgdon wanted a replacement for black and kind of rushed Pyrodex on the market.
 
I've noticed that 80 grains of BH209 feels much like my 308 when fired.

The other powers I've used have more of a soft push kind of recoil, while the BH209 has a sharp punch, like a high-powered rifle.

I'd imagine the velocity is quite a bit higher, though I haven't tried shooting thru a chronograph.


An 8 oz. container of Blackhorn 209 is about $80 per container (if you can find it AND it's not marked up). Note: Previously, it was sold in 10 oz. containers, now it's 8 oz (Crap if you ask me).

Anyway, if shooting 120 volumetric units (84 grains) you get 41 shots per 8 oz. container.
 
I would love to know the real cause of the price increases of powders, I shoot N110 in my savage but load the Blackhorn for the grandson. You can hear about any theory as to the price increases,

Keep an eye out at local Wal-Mart stores once ML season closes. A buddy of mine picked me up a lifetime supply of BH209 in Arkansas after last season for 49.50 per 8 oz bottle.

Over the years, I've used Pyrodex powder, 777 pellets, and now BH209. The convenience of 777 pellets was nice but my overall favorite is BH209.
 
Checked my scope Today. I usually shoot 80 gr. Triple 7 with a 350 gr. Maxi-Hunter. I've never chronographed it but, did chronograph 90 gr. and a 350 gr. Maxi-Hunter. It did 1560 fps, 15 feet from muzzle. I shot 4 of the 90 gr loads. Doesn't kick shoulder bad but, jumps off bags bad. Shot ok though.

White hots are the one thing that keeps me from switching to BH209. I just don't shoot far enough with a ML to notice a difference.
