Looking to go to Nebraska for a Merriam hunt this season. Anyone have any experience out in Northwest NE on a free lance hunt? Also considering using an outfitter if anyone has used one there and would recommend them again! Thanks!

I went last year to Nebraska. It was a great hunt. I hunted with The Roost Lodge. Kind of pricey but I filled an entire season limit on my first day of the hunt and my buddy killed one too. It was impressive the number of birds and the operation they have there.

Their website shows them charging 1000 per turkey.

Yeah looks like a great outfit but that's a lil over my budget. One outfit I spoke with is 1300 all inclusive for 2 birds and like 200 if you want a third.

It may not make a difference to you, it didnt to me, but the elitist do not consider NE birds true merriams, but Hybrids. When I went, we were in the eastern part of the state. I killed two birds that looked like rios, and one that would have passed for an eastern on any farm in TN. If you want white tipped birds, may need to hunt further west. A buddy killed a white one, but it was the exception. (The only one out of 7 killed on the trip). We were near Niobrara.

Yeah we had a bunch of good guides in eastern part but we are only going in NW corner to get a pure merriam. We may have found a spot in that area! Thanks!

And by NO means am I an elitist! Ha

Yeah, if I had killed a white tipped bird, I would have called it a Merriam, counted it towards my bucket list, and slept perfectly well at night. :D

Not to derail the thread, but this is mind-blowing to me. WOW!
Yup, especially coming from a state where its so easy to kill a bird on public land.
