New turkey gun!!

My wife got me a 835 ulti mag last weekend, has a short barrel and seems to be bored to a 10ga. Anyone have one? Tips?

Never seen a 835 in 10 guage but that don't mean that they don't exist.

It is overbored, they typically pattern turkey loads great, and they typically kick like a mule. It will serve the purpose just fine if you can stand the recoil. Felt/perceived recoil is greater shooting paper than it will be shooting a turkey in the woods.

I guess I worded that wrong, it's a 12ga but seems to be as big as a 10ga. With just 3in it kicks pretty good! Is the factory choke worth a crap?

It's a 12 gauge chamber with a 10 gauge bore. Overbored is what they call it.

I had one for years and they are turkey killing machines! They should put a health warning on them about shooting a 3.5 inch shell! It's terrible trying to pattern those shells on paper but like Andy said you don't feel it near as bad with a gobbler in front of you! The last shell I shot out of mine was the Winchester long beard # 6 and it patterned great. I would suggest the 3 inch version!

What is it, a modified, full, improved cylinder, or what? What distances do you plan to shoot, and what shells do you plan to shoot? We need more details to give you a solid recommendation.

It's the turkey model so I'd say it xfull, I'm shooting long beard #4

The choke that came with your gun should be just fine.

Unless you're really interested and willing to spend over $100 (choke plus more shells for even more pattern testing)
only to "maybe" gain 5 yards range, maybe, then just go with what you have.
Then, should you get a tighter after-market choke, you may absolutely need an optical sight.

Just my opinion, but I think many turkey hunters are handicapping themselves with too much choke, having rifle-like patterns, that can cause more misses at close & average ranges.

My biggest concern, regardless of your setup (gun/choke/ammo) is that your setup shoots true to where you are pointing/aiming it. Get in turkey hunting position (sitting on ground, gun on knee, good cheek weld) and shoot 2-3 shells at a BIG sheet of paper (35" x 35" minimum) to be sure POA=POI. You can shoot the best pattern in the world, but if it is 2 feet to the left, you won't ever kill a turkey.

I'd recommend this cheap, but essential trigger upgrade for any turkey hunting gun. All of my turkey gun triggers break at 3.5 lbs or so.

I have the 835 and the 935 but like everyone says,the 835 will kick hard and I mean hard.When I shoot the 835 I alwayshold my left hand holding the forearm and it will almost eject the empty hull by itself!!Like everyone,you dont notice it when shooting a gobbler but paper is another thing.Both my Mossbergs shoot a great pattern with the Winchester Longbeard shells!! :tu:

you can say that again! Learned that the hard way. My 535 is worse than 835 IMO

X2.......put this in my stepson's 500 20ga and it really helped.

I got rid of my 835 because of that, but I thought is was because of my short arms. It would just about eject the shell after firing. Good to know it wasn't me but it did kick pretty good. I never even attempted 3.5 out of it.
