Does anyone polish there barrel???

I am a Remington guy and I do the deep cleaning on my barrels as recommended on Old Gobbler. I don't know if this is your definition of polishing but it leaves a mirror finish and helps the pattern.
Yeah I think that's it. How much difference do you see in your pattern since you started polishing??
from 20 up to as high as 35% increases in density for me

$20 is high for lead but I'd buy it if I felt like switching loads. I still like the Supremes (now Double X)... kilt one at 50 this fall with the 5 shot supreme load. Got one last fall at 45 with same load. That is plenty far for me. I still haven't found the appeal to counting pellets in a circle, I guess it's not for everybody. I better stay away from it, because I have too many hobbies and when I pick something up, I really can pick it up.

$20 for 10 shells that outperform other lead loads is actually pretty reasonable. $2 a shell is pretty cheap considering all the other expenses that come with turkey hunting.

its not about counting pellets in a circle, its about maximizing the best pattern your gun can shoot which in turn gives you the confidence to put ethical shots on the game your hunting. Its no different then trying to get 1" groups on rifles at 100yds.

if your shooting XX shell that is putting a decent no hole group of 120 pellets at 40yds that is fine but for just $1 more per shell you shoot it could put numbers up like 200-220 at 40yds which is a MUCH more ethical and consistent option for those longer shots.

Thanks for the post and information, i'll buy a box and see how they perform at of my turkey gun. I've had great success with shooting win, #5's in the past. Twenty dollars a box isn't that much of a stretch for what you get. I've spent a lot more for the xtended range shells...

Great post REN.

I'll second that.... I could never trust a couple lucky pellets. As the commercial says.... If I have worked a bird in, I've come too far to miss.

Yup I'm with you guys, I might even shoot me some of that Hevi stuff this year

Most of my long shots were busted fall flocks... when I call the gobblers in the spring it's usually inside 30 yards and often in the woods. Haven't hunted long enough to have one hang up at 40+ yards. I see your point REN about $2/shell being a good price for a very tight patterning lead load. My only concern with these long range tight patterns is the close range tendency to miss...

you are mixing tight and good patterns. you don't just look at a 10" and count them up, you look at the consistency of a 4 quadrant 10" to see gaps and holes in the pattern. Then you look at the same thing in a 20" circle to see if there are gaps or holes there as well. You can find a very good number pattern at 40yds and it not be a golfball at 20. Regardless of the pattern, if you are using an XFULL choke and turkey loads it is TIGHT TIGHT at close range. If you want a close range pattern that is not the size of a baseball you need to shoot a standard full or Mod choke.

Im not trying to talk you into anything, you do and shoot whatever you personally like. I just don't like the idea that you can't have a good 40yd pattern and it be a good 20-30yd pattern as well.

i do find it odd you have no issue shooting 50yds at fall birds but only 30 at toms in the spring. In 20 years of turkey hunting I actually shot the first one ever over 40yds last year, but I still want to maximize my gun and i want to know EXACTLY what it will do at any yardage needed. I do it with all my weapons, I got a new 7mm-08 this year and I bet i went through 5-6 different boxes of ammo until i found the one that shot the best with my gun. To me that part of the fun and part of the hunt.

again Catman I'm not saying anything you are doing is wrong or unethical and if you got something thats working then keep on keeping on if you know what I'm saying.

This will be a great option for hunters looking to save a few dimes per turkey but still have a better shell from 30 to 45 yards - assuming they were shooting lead before.

But it's still lead, and patterning better will not increase the pellets' penetration energy.

It is also going to pattern very tight at close range. I have seen a couple 20 yd patterns, and I expect misses will increase inside of 30 yds.

Marketing the shell as a 60+ yard shell is unethical, IMO. I wish Winchester wouldn't do that.
