No one in my family or friends hunt, what to do after killing a deer?

Field dress it/gut it as soon as possible....then drag it out to your vehicle. You can drag by hand or there are actual game carts that you can purchase and use for the task. Trust me, a little money spent on a good game cart is worth the expense. Then take it to a local processor if you're not sure of how to process it yourself. If you want to have a shoulder mount done, there is a way of field dressing and skinning it to leave the cape intact for the taxidermist. There should be several videos on youtube about how to field dress....skin properly for doing a mount and even process the deer if you want to do it yourself. Good luck on the season.

If it's something you don't want to mount, carefully gut it in the field (be careful not to pierce the gut!) continuing the cut right through the sternum & remove the heart & lungs.
If you're in a public area or on private land, have a little decency & drag it of out of the way first. Nobody wants to walk up to a 3 day old gutpile!

If it's something you'd like to mount, stop your cut AT the sternum. You'll have to cut the diaphragm away, then reach up into the ribs, sever the windpipe & drag the heart & lungs free.

I see you're in Winchester, just down the road from me. If you'd like any help when you get one down, please feel free to give me a call. I process & butcher deer for several friends (since all the processors around here are all stupid spendy) & I'd be more than happy to come help you gut & drag. It's a hell of a lot easier seeing some one do it, than working from a description! If you'd like a butchering lesson, I'm more than happy to bring it back here & walk you through it, step by step. Vacuum pack your meat & get it all freezer ready. I don't charge anything, by the way. I do it because I enjoy doing it.

PM me & I'll pass on my number.

I was in the same boat back in the day. Today you have a very valuable thing in Youtube. What I would do after getting out of my stand is first and foremost thank the good Lord that you were blessed with the opportunity to enjoy His creation. Then I would take plenty of pictures since it's your first cause you ONLY get one of those. Then I'd gut it in the woods and call all my buddies cause I couldn't contain my excitement. It's a continuing learning experience so if you mess something up the first time then there will be other opportunities to do it differently next.

I'd take him up on that offer, if I were you. That's a lot of valuable information he's willing to show and share.

Yes, sir , I really appreciated. Will do, I don't want to trouble you at the moment as I'm not sure where to hunt and all that. I will definitely reach out to you as I get closer sir

I'm more than happy to help!

Are you bowhunting or rifle?

I can point you to a patch of public that's very overlooked. I bowhunted it for years & killed a ton of deer there, but i no longer bowhunt. It's no good for rifle or muzzleloader (right next to a subdivision) but it's a fantastic bow spot.
Hell, I'll even walk you to the 2 trees! 😁

Very generous offers! Very nice of you sir. We need more hunters like you.

I have tied their feet together rolled them up in a tarp put a rope around the head area and drag away. It worked until i could do better.

Do I gutted it right there and drag it out to my car with my hand?

What to do if I want to make it into a Mount for my first kill?
The offers robtattoo have made are way more than generous! I would suggest reaching out to him and exchange your help for his efforts ! What he is willing to give you is time, effort, education and supplies that will make life easier for you and save your venison cost for years to come. You will harvest more meat cut in the right way and enjoy the whole hunt so much more if you 1. Learn how first hand and 2. Have a buddy you can help or he can help you is a great thing and could start a lifelong friendship

Take Robtattoo up on learning from him, it will save you alot of time and money. I can show you some spots on public land in Franklin County to get you started if you want. I hunt 95% of the time by myself and would be glad to show you a couple areas.
