No quota hunts at LBL this year

I do not know the name of the committee or the details southern sportsman . I called Wed evening and spoke with a lady at LBL and she gave me a number to the gentleman that I ended up speaking to Thursday morning at 931 AM Eastern time. She said something about him being on a leadership committee or something to that effect ( may just be a job title or something). I am just passing along what I was told, if I had concerns I would definitely call or email LBL.

The more I think and the more I read it's sounds like somebody screwed something up or the quota draw vendor wasn't paid or something along those lines. I'd really like to think they are being proactive on the population but if they plan to go back to "business as usual" for next year...

Maybe someone complained about the quota hunt and non pressured birds, blah, blah. So leadership just came up with a typical government response and passed the blame.

I mean, if they are really concerned with "equal opportunity" then why only do it for one year?

Asking them to own up to it is a lost cause, I know. But, I just cannot accept the reasoning as it makes zero sense to me.

Agree 100%. A section of the United States Forrest Service suddenly deciding to suspend quota hunts that have been going on for 30 years, including a youth hunt, because a few people complained about not getting the first opportunity to hunt "unpressured" turkeys every other year on a 170,000 acre tract of federally owned public land is absolutely the least likely of all possible explanations.

My thoughts exactly.

I agree ! It makes no sense at all. The one year thing , I can't figure it. I do hope all goes back to normal next year as they have said.

From what I've been hearing it may be back to business as usual next year but I would expect a "new" normal.
There has been a certain group with a loud voice complaining about the turkey hunting at LBL for several years.
Just my speculation but maybe their voice is louder than I previously thought.
I would expect the regulations for KY and TN to mirror each other in the future.
Once again this is pure speculation on my part based off rumors.
If I'm wrong so be it, if I'm right you heard it here first. ;)

I posted in the thread in the General Forum but I agree with most all here. To reiterate the strangest part to me is a government entity making such a drastic change without any formal public input period. That just doesn't happen.
Also, if there was such an overwhelming public outcry, it would have made it on to this & other similar forums.

I'll get over it, LBL isn't even one of my main stomping grounds but I love to visit any chance I get for a bunch of reasons.
It's just my luck that I had put in for preference points specifically to be able to draw the early KY hunt this spring. Was going to be a fun hunting trip with buddies. We'll do it next year, no big deal.

I have only hunted open dates in the past and it's been fine. I am worried about the crowd with such a shortened window. If it is as crazy as expected then I do feel sorry for the guys who hunt LBL as their main spot. Hopefully it won't be too bad.

They are sticking to their story. If that is really how and why they made the change, it's concerning for a lot of reason. Not the least of which being - they took away 30% of the hunting days - including a designated youth hunt - because a few people complained that they couldn't have first shot at the turkey every year. And they did it without any formal process. Arbitrarily taking away hunting opportunities because a few people whined should concern everyone.

I've asked around and the best I can come up with is that they are keeping a "call log of hunter input" about it. I'll post a separate thread with the contact info.

Let me again reiterate my disappointment in the lack of communications
and the obvious administrative incompetence coming from LBL's "powers that be".

All those who have turkey hunted LBL are owed a better explanation than what has been given.
I hope it is forthcoming, and sooner rather than later.

That said, there are some who hunt (and manage LBL's wildlife resources) who are very legitimately concerned with LBL's turkey situation, and have for years been requesting both the TN statewide and the LBL area to NOT begin turkey hunting as soon each year, mainly because delaying the opening date will improve nesting success.
THAT "could" have been done without eliminating the youth hunt, and without eliminating the quota turkey hunts.

Tie this in with LBL's feral pig situation which as been rapidly getting worse, not just for the landscape & habitat, but for the prospects for nesting success of all ground-dwelling birds, particularly turkeys. There will be a lot few turkeys at LBL in the coming years if the pig problem isn't brought under control, and time has never been more of essence.

I know this is a lame excuse, but making turkey season open later may allow for more pigs to be killed before the turkeys start nesting.
Delaying turkey season will most definitely improve nesting success.

"AT Hiker" posted the below on another thread, but his "findings" need to be emphasized here:

Spent 2 days and 15+ miles hiking around LBL this weekend. Seen zero turkey sign, literally nothing.
The hog sign has increased since last year.
My understanding is AT Hiker is an avid "woodsman" and what he saw, and/or didn't see, in mid-February speaks volumes.

My biggest concern is "hog sign has increased since last year."

I just noticed on LBL's 2020 Turkey Fact Sheet on their website that it states that the final day of the Non-Quota Turkey hunt on both the Tennessee and Kentucky portions is May 1. But their memo in red print on their Quota Hunt page states the final day is April 30 on both portions. Has anyone spoken with them and got a clarification as to which date is correct??

I'll be anxious to hear feedback from everyone with the way LBL is setup this year coupled with the likely mass influx of hunters as a result of so many people being off work or working remotely.
