I was planning to do the ole run and gun on Sunday morning. I thought I would get in the woods early, hit the owl call, hear a gobble, sit down and wait til he flew down in my direction. I had it all planned out perfectly.

Mr. Tom had other plans. I walked about 2 miles in a very good area before daylight with no response at all. At daylight I started doing some runs with no response still. I decided to set up on a road where I have killed one before. I sat there for 1 hour and only saw two hens that would not leave my decoys alone. After they left I moved about 200 yards to a field that has also produced in the past.

On this field the same two hen came back. I watched them for 20 minutes and then they froze in place. I thought maybe a Tom moved into the field but I could not see or hear anything. All of a sudden a Coyote pops out right next to my decoys. I took him out with the No 4 Turkey shot with no problems at all. Where I hunt they want you to kill everyone you see. Now it was getting late and I had some Easter Eggs to hunt so I gathered everything and headed to the truck.

After drving for about 2 minutes I saw three large toms headed through a field. I decided to stop and give it one more try. I snuck into the opposite edge of the field they were in and decided to call before they got too far gone. As soon as I called all three gobbled their heads off and come running straight at me. I had not dropped a decoy or anything. The wind was blowing good by now so they must have gotten confused cause they passed me up at 80 yards and kept going even though I was calling. They crossed a road and seemed to keep moving. I decide to set out my Jake and Hen anyway and give it thirty more minutes. I sat down and called but it was into the wind. I thought occasionally I could hear a gobble but wasn't for sure in the wind. I sat calling every 5 mins or so. At the last possible minute could hunt I started to stand up to gather everything when all three of the previous Toms showed up at my decoys. Not a gobble or any other sound that I could hear at all. I sized them up as they showed out for the hen. All looked exactly the same size so I decided to take the one that had the most attitude. He flopped and I was on my way with my first of the year. It was a very cool hunt. With the gas prices the way they are it may be the last one of this year but, I can say this year was a great one. I was planning to do the ole run and gun on Sunday morning.
