AT Hiker, what in particular was bothering you? Was it just the amount of gimmicks and tv hunting celebrities or what?
First off I have no qualms with gimmicks and tv celebs, I love capitalism (if used properly and no individual is purposefully hurt). I also think there are truly great products out there. What bothers me is the majority of people (hunters) are treating hunting as this sacred fraternity and if your not part of a pro staff your not invited to the secret party, per say.
I have met and personally know (sadly enough) hunters who have become so lost in the popularity contest of the hunting "industry" that they have lost touch with reality. Hunting should not be judged solely as a contest amongst hunters yet the NWTF convention has evolved into such, the atmosphere is different. Its not just the NTWF convention either, archery shops and check stations are not immune either. I remember anxiously awaiting to talk to a game warden, biologist or forest ranger about hunting and access. Now those guys are pushed to the back of the exhibit hall so kids can line up to get a autograph of a "pro" who looks good on camera and kills animals on highly managed property for said reason. Once again nothing wrong with that in the general sense but it has over taken the mind set of many many young and new hunters that I feel their reality bubble is to thin and fragile.
You may not see it from my perspective but I am willing to bet as you evolve and mature in your hunting career you will start to notice these not so subtle abnormalities in this great sport.
Sale all the spit drum gobble grunt bleat calls you want, more power to you. But when the sport becomes dominated by the industry I think we have crossed the line and turning back is bleak.
Im not envious of the people who have chosen to pursue this industry, some are true visionaries, as long as they understand the relevance and give back to the habitat all is well in my book. Its this new following that I have noticed as of lately that is starting to appear that really has me baffled, Im convinced that if Michael Waddle farted into a flute and made a tom gobble he could market and sale that flute as a locater call.
I rambled on quite a bit and probably made no sense at all. Bottom line is I see hunting losing its intimacy and grandeur to popularity and fame. Maybe I should ignore my inner romantic feelings for the outdoors and accept the reality that events like this are solely for the purpose of monetary gains and very little of anything else.
