Odd/Obsolete Calibers

My first rifle purchased for deer was a VZ24 8mm Mauser. Never got to use it, don't ask I'll get upset and want to hurt my ex-wife. My son's first is a Mosin-Nagant. I'm thinking of trying to find a sportster milsup for my next rifle. They can still be found fairly economically.

Not as obsure as some of the calibers you guys are talking about but, I use to hunt with a Winchester model 94 in .307 cal. Awesome caliber, dont know why it didnt catch on. It is basically a 308 but has the wide base like a 30-30 shell and uses a flat nose bullet.
Great gun until my X wife decided she wanted it more than me.

Have been looking recently at buying another..

Thanks 257!

I also have a 405 WCF that has yet to kill a deer and another self-loader in 35 WSL not the 351 it's the earlier model. I have never hunted with it. I also have a Savage 99 in 300 Savage that I have yet to slay with.

My model 71 has been an excellent rifle. With the proper bullet, it can tackle any game on this continent. You're right that big tapered cartridge is a time capsule! Winchester is offering the model 71 again! It's made by Mirouko and their guns are excellent. It is about $1300. Plateau Hunter might still have his Browning 71 carbine for sale. I think he wanted $900 for it. Send him a PM.

If I'm not mistaken, the 405 WCF was one of Teddy Roosevelts favorites. He used it on this continent as well as in Africa with much success.

Fell into a 405 Win wildcat Encore Bbl, shaped up some wood for it, walnut accented with boxwood
sweet shooter with Lyman 412267 cast

7.62 x 39 out of an old Russian Tula sks. It always gets the job done. Never had a deer run when shot by it but it's certainly an odd caliber and odd rifle for deer hunting with. Especially when you pull out the bayonet on the front 🤣
