Odd/Obsolete Calibers

Wildcat rounds - or rounds so hard to find they require reloading - used by my family: 7mmTCU, 357 Herrett, 357 Maximum. Also, my great-grandfather's Remington 32 rimless.

I've got a .338winmag that seems to have become obsolete. Used to readily find ammo over the counter but not anymore. I got it for moose hunting when I lived in Alaska. Haven't shot a deer with it but zero doubt it would serve the purpose.

Do any of you ever hunt with any off the wall calibered rifles?

I collect classic deer rifles and hunt with them frequently. Some of these rifles come in odd calibers that must be reloaded for or fatory ammo is scarce and pricey.

There is a particular pleasure that arises from hunting with a rifle from another era. Some of the calibers I have taken deer with are...

25-35 WCF
30-40 Krag
44-40 WCF
38-55 WCF
401 self-loader
I'm pretty sure I have a box of 30-40 Krag. It's old because it was my dad's

That's awesome thanks! I've not pulled that old thing out in years because it was getting so hard to find ammo, and now that I'm in TN it's too much gun for anything here.

I still use the 8mm and 7mm Mausers in modern rifles. Handloaded, they give up nothing to more modern rounds.

I also love the .444 Marlin and .375 Winchester in lever actions. I wouldn't say they're necessarily obsolete, but they sure aren't seen as often these days.

I won a .25 WSSM at a NWTF dinner about 20 years ago. Never killed anything with it. I have about a box of ammo for it but dont want to shoot it cause they dont make ammo anymore. I need to find someone that can do reloads.

I used to have one of those. I hand loaded for it. Ammo does come available occasionally...just have to watch for it. I heard they only do a run about once every year or two.

I know this was originally a very old thread, but I have my 97 yr old Papaw's Savage Model 99 chambered in .250-3000 Savage that I want to get a deer with. I'm not taking it while he's alive though. He'd skin me if I scratched it! 😂
I carry my 99A in 250-3000 once a year... Killed two with it last year...

Killed my first deer and a few more with a Winchester lever action .32 win special. Loved that old gun. It had the saddle rings and the metal butt plate that was concave to better fit the shoulder. Sadly I lost that rifle in a house fire in 97. The wild bill Cody museum in Wyoming valued that gun at $1600 / $1700 for my insurance then. It had open sights and shot very accurately
