Shot one trailing a doe this morning. Found Long grey hair no blood. He ran off twitching and tucking his tail. He got on a neighbor so waiting for permission to track. All the hair is telling me maybe a graze up high. But the tail is making me think he was fatally hit.

After a few deer in my lifetime the tail means exactly squat, ive seen heart and double lunged deer run off ringin their tail, tail tucked, tail straight out, tail flagging like a miss!
The 8 I shot about 10 days or so ago trotted off tail in the air. Swore I had missed but I had not! So the tail isn't a sign of hit imo either.

Yes and the ole a shot deer won't go up is wrong too . A friend and I trailed a buck I shot with a bow ...he went down a ridge and back up . That's when I thought I hadn't shot a kill shot but we found him . He walked until he ran plumb out of blood ...I guessed at least 1/2 mile . The broadhead creased his heart and he still went that far .

How far did he go before getting on neighbor? That would mean more to me than not having blood. I rarely get blood trails from gun hit deer but they're still dead. In my experience if he's not dead within 200yds of the shot then he's not hit fatally or he's gut hit. If he's gut hit then wait 12hrs minimum before searching.
