Slate, box, or mouth call? I prefer the mouth(1) and box(2) bc I have had more practice and feel more comfortable. I have a slate call(3) I have been practicing on and am going to try it more this year. 2 part question: If you prefer mouth calls what type of calls do you use?

Box call is easy as heck but I probably won't bring it on saturday morning. I have used a tube call longer than anything else and am getting pretty good with a mouth call too so those will be with me as well as a slate call. The tube calls are homemade and the mouth call is a HS Strut Raspy Old Hen. The slate is a HS ring zone something or other with a carbon striker. Also whittled an old hickory drumstick to make a striker that sounds good.

Tube calls seem to cluck and putt best in my opinion but I have to hear some more experienced guys tell me that before I go by it as a rule.

1. Mouth call, till they get close then I purr with my nwtf glass call, bc I have yet to figure out how to purr on my diaphram and won't break out my box unless it's windy or I'm calling long way off to get one fired up

2b. tube call
3. wing beat

i HATE box calls so none will be found in my lot of calls.

boy I forgot about the wingbeat I use my hat instead but I don't guess I did this a single time last yearthanks for the reminder

yeah trevor i used my hat for years until i got tired of the dang metal clip on the back hitting my leg...just took off a wing from a bird i killed and duck tapped the end to use as a handle. just stays in my vest now...great tool to use from time to time.

No only time I have used hat is early morning to mimic a flydown...... Now I do have a buddy who will rub the wingnon a tree just as if u were tickling deer antlers against a tree. Hope this helps.

i will use them any time of the day. If a bird is hunt out of sight i will use it....same concept as leaves.

if you watch a flock they are flapping their wings all the time so it is a common sound to a bird.
