Reading buck tracks

I have seen some huge does and look at there tracks and would have thought it was a 250 pound buck. But it was a 200 pound doe instead. I don't even really pay attention to the tracks anymore. Sometimes I hunt places that has no sign at all. But deer will be loaded in that spot

Yeah, it takes research, education and reading comprehension to find all these obscure facts that get printed in lofty tomes available only to those who know where to look. I use to think all you had to do was type online and say, "lemme see the facts."

Wish I could give you some citations, but honestly, I read so many research reports (literally thousands) that I can't keep track of them. In addition, many of the best (which are presented at scientific symposiums) are never published, or are only published in scientific journals not available to the general public (only found in university libraries).

I don't know any better example than deer are like people. You can have 6' tall man with a size 10 foot or a 6' tall man that wears a size 19 shoe. You can have a 3.5 year old buck that weighs 250 or the same age deer that is 100 pounds lighter and shorter to the shoulder. The foot size is different on every deer. Why is that so hard to wrap your head around???

A perfect example of this can be seen at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, CA when you look at John Wayne's footprints in the concrete of the sidewalk. It's shocking how small his feet were and he was no small man.

Thanks Planking im glad to see someone got the gist of this threads original post rather than "you cant tell buck size from track size...period" Ill broaden my computer searching skills one day and obtain the ability to do better research on my own i reckon.

"Despite these clues, however, there is only one way to be absolutely certain about the sex and size of the deer that made a particular track, and that is to find the track while the deer is still in it!"

the last sentence in one of Planking's links. just like was said.
