With all this talk about proper methods to take a long beard I have a serious question for all. Do you hunt turkeys for the pure enjoyment of nature or just so you can send pictures to your friends and post it on a website? Honestly, I see both sides of the deal but feel there is way too much chest thumping and bragging when it comes to hunting. Make sure you enjoy the birds this weekend and are thankful for the harvest if you are lucky.

Tom Kelly says it best. I don't hunt turkeys because I want to, I hunt them because I have to. There is just a desire in me that I can't shake or suppress, the feeling of something I just have to do.

REN said it pretty well, I will add that the adrenaline rush of calling one in it even stalking close range is what keeps me in the woods. Bragging or posting pics is just icing on the cake, the real hunt is about going into the woods during the best time of year and doing what we turkey hunters have to do.

What sucks is it seems every Tom Richard and Harry seem to turkey hunt these days. I miss the days when it wasn't a very popular sport and was a bit easier to find places to hunt. The only people I care about sharing stories or kills with are guys who understand what it's all about. You can usually tell who those guys are pretty quick.

I hunt them because there is just something about a sunrise with the sound of them gobbling on roost. Trying to set up and get them to work when they fly down, and call them in so close when they make that last gobble it almost startles you

And they taste awesome lol

I was fixing to make the same quote. I'm obsessed with turkey hunting but my wife will argue I'm possessed at time. Lol

I must admit that turkey hunting gets me more excited than any other hunting I do (deer, duck, dove etc...). Something about the woods waking up with songbirds, soft yelps, and loud gobbles. Also, its the woodsmanship that makes a great turkey hunter. Knowing the lay of the land, when to stay put and when to move, when to call or when to be quiet, how to close the distance, etc. etc. Sometimes, even the most immature turkey hunter can kill a turkey. But, its the woodsman that kills them every year after year after year.

100% my feelings!!

There's just something about being in nature, watching the woods come alive, and hearing those thunderous gobbles break the silence. When he's so close the ground shakes and you can hear him spitting and drumming and then the sun beats down on him as you see him in full strut. Its just a beautiful thing to experience.

I really hope no one feels they have to kill to post on website or compete with friends. And really hope no one stops posting their kills, lots of time I really enjoy the stories. You can learn differ techniques from stories posted.if a good hunter can pull a gobbler from hens across 2 fences, a road, and a thicket, that takes skill. Post up and be proud of the accomplishment

Same here

Hunt just about everything

It isn't something I do, it is who I am.

My family and coworkers all know it too, and have been asking when it begins.

They are preparing themselves for my morph from calm, mild-mannered guy to crazed lunatic whose mind always seems to be someplace else. They know to keep their distance until the demon possession is exorcised when the season ends.

I hunt because I don't care for sports or crowds or many other activities other than fishing. I enjoy alone time in the woods. Not "alone" but sharing camp with a couple others and shutting off from the rest of the world. In fact, I'm about to leave downtown Nashville and head to my cabin to hunt all weekend. I feel like its Christmas eve.

I agree 100%. The internet is a huge negative for hunting. People don't care about woodsmanship or doing things the right way. They just want to post a pic on line. The best turkey hunters I know rarely post a pic. You don't even know how many they've killed unless you ask them point blank. They are in it purely for the enjoyment of the hunt.

I honestly do it because I have to. I would prefer relaxing in the boat crappie fishing, but I don't have a choice. The thought of the sun coming up and birds hammering is too much temptation for me to pass up.
