I have never been a huge turkey hunter due to spring time fishing but can usually hold my own in the turkey woods when I do get to go and manage to call in a few gobblers ever year. Well, this sitting on the sidelines with a broke leg for the remainder of this year has me looking forward to next year more and more. I mostly use a mouth call and the HS Strut Raspy Old Hen is my go to. I called both gobblers in with it this year.

Next year though, I am looking to add a couple of custom pot calls and maybe trying another mouth call or two. I have had success with what works but would like to have a few more options.

So, what two pot calls would you recommend me getting? From reading on here and from the sound files, I am thinking about a Halloran Crystal Mistress and a Dawkins Aluminum. Thoughts?

What about mouth calls?

Look at Enticer turkey calls on his website , discovered them last year when i was looking for a call to run in the rain . Now I have a couple and my son has a couple . Very reasonably priced and very good quality . I like the silver fox and the wet wonder , his strikers are very good also and most of his calls are in the $35 to $45 range . Lifetime warranty , if you break one send it back with $6 and he will fix it. I have killed 2 birds this year with his pots

I have a lausman glass I'm selling if you want s nice custom call

This is one of my favorite questions to answer. The Crystal Mistress and Dawkins aluminum are two of the best calls out there. I've had dozens of pot calls over the years and the Crystal Mistress is probably my favorite. Check out Jimmy Schaffer of Oak Ridge Custom Calls as well.

As for mouth calls, you can't beat Hook's custom calls! I'm also a big fan of David Halloran's mouth calls as well.

Darrin Dawkins, David Halloran are really as good as they get. Be cautious there's a bunch claiming to be custom, but they're not, they're just parts glued together that are pre made

If you fish more than turkey hunt then I wouldn't recommend a call that cost more than $50. But that's entirely up to you. I'm cheap anyways but maybe some day I'll buy one of those nice custom calls. I just haven't felt the need cause I seem to do Ok with wing bone, tube and mouth calls. It's really just preference though. For mouth calls I like the Woodhaven stinger series and this year I tried the Gooserbat Bacon, which is easy to run and sounds good too. Unfortunately I suck at mouth call care, and I tore one of the reeds. I used to use the raspy old hen, and that's a great call for only 5 bucks.

I don't own a Dawkins call but I feel comfortable to say just from some of the guys on here that it is the top of the line.
I am really enjoying my calls from David Halloran. I own his Twisted Sister, Walnut Slate and checkered short box. I plan on adding the Crystal Mistress and possibly his or Darrin's Aluminum if all goes well by next year.
I would also say just from the raving on oldgobbler that Mr. Lonnie Sneed is worth looking into. His hot hen slate and Green glass pots are highly recommended there. His prices are very affordable. $30.00 for a true Custom call. A joy to talk with as I understand. I may add those at some point. I'm addicted to pot calls. Financial reasons keep me in check or I would have a room full. You are welcome to run my TS anytime.

I fish more than I turkey hunt, but I still enjoy turkey hunting when I can. I have had a lot of success with a mouth call but just want to add at least one custom pot to my arsenal. I know if it ain't broke don't fix it, but I would like another option sometimes. Plus, sitting on the sidelines right now is driving me CRAZY so I'm looking for something to satisfy my desire for next year.

I have read the same on oldgobbler, they speak highly of his pot calls.

I haven't bought a custom pot call but the crystal mistress and Darrin Dawkins are the two I'd look at. As for mouth calls I bought some by Hooks this year and really like them. They are a little smaller but still work for me. I read somewhere, maybe here, that you can call and ask them to leave more around the edges so the frame is a little bigger. I ordered two and one was sent wrong. I emailed them and he emailed me back to keep it and he'd send me the correct one. Can't argue with that.

That's what I thought until I called and talked to him and got a price one month ago. :)

Oh well I talked to him 2 weeks ago and it was $50 and I've always heard it was $50

Not saying you are wrong or not told that, may have just been a misunderstanding

Maybe he has different pricing for different customers. I asked him two times about the price of the plastic. He told me $100 both times.
Not sure how that could be misunderstood!

If you are looking for something to do, go back to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=306539 and check out the two companies that were recommended to me. Shipley's has a pot call kit with all the components, glue, clamps and instructions to make some calls. The other company has some kits as well. Both have all of the various components to make one up.

I have a feeling that killing a turkey with a call I have made will be sort of like catching trout on flies I've tied. I'm sure they won't be as good as the Halloran call that I have coming, but since turkeys certainly have individual "voices", I might be able to assemble one that can call one in as well. I have a Shipley's kit coming, and look forward to trying in the coming months.

After looking at what is available, it is pretty obvious that with the components that are commercially available that you can make a bunch of "custom" calls for the price that some are being sold for.
