Let's get your sight and lens question out here and uncluttered by other subjects!

Let me ask 2 questions: How old are you> Do you wear eyeglasses or contacts?

Answer these questions and it will be easier to advise you on a sight lens combo!

38 and I have glasses but don't wear them my vision is not that bad targets are a little blurred at long distances. I can see fine up close.

You're young enough that you've most likely got a few years before it gets real complicated trying to shoot a bow with eyeglasses!

If you're wanting to shoot a multi pin set-up then Axcel Armor Tech bow sights are among some of the best and they are highly customizable and lens adaptable. In a single pin configuration sight that is lens adaptable your choices are near
endless!

For you, I would suggest starting with a 4X lens , 1/8" Specialty Archery Super Peep, and a #1 clarifier to start. I would most likely buy the aperture kit to experiment with also.

Can you help out a 50(51 in May)guy that wears reader's and can not see the 8 ring at 20 yrds?

Thanks. Would you recommend this for hunting or just target shooting ?
I wouldn't recommend shooting a lense hunting . Some people do it though . I would think it would be hard to acquire the target and you would have to worry about it fogging up on damp hunts etc ...

Re: RedhunterZ71...

I tried shooting a lens in low light in my backyard. No way I would want to hunt with a lens. For me in low light the lens actually makes it harder to see the target. It's almost like the lens "magnifies" the dark.

I agree completely!

TF, If you can't see the 8 ring at 20 yds, it sounds as if you may have diagnosed your own problem! You need more in the way of eyeglasses than readers! Most likely you need progressive lenses or bifocal lenses for eyeglasses. You need distance correction at least while looking through a peep. You might also try experimenting with the different apertures available.

Re: RedhunterZ71...

With my 4x lens and #1 clarifier, I still can't quite make out the 10 ring line beyond 30 yards unless the sunlight is perfectly on that spot. I can however, see the little things I have trained myself to look for on the targets...and that helps a ton.

Without the lens, I was basically shooting in the vicinity of where I thought the 10 or 12 rings were. Once I put my binoculars down, I was basically shooting by memory of that image. And it really showed. My scores plummeted to about an average of 2 down - even. This being in Open C class...40 yard max, known yardage. I was getting slaughtered by the guys shooting 10+ up.

Once I got the lens and found the clarifier I needed...the game changed. Now, when I look through my binoculars and see that little brown spot of arrow holes that marks the 12, or somebodys arrow that's just to the left/right of the 12...I can see that same spot through the scope and hold on it...instead of just seeing foam with no details about it. My game has jumped from 2 down to averaging 16 up; with about 8-9 twelves per round. Hopefully I can continue this as my base line and improve on it when it counts, and at least make a top 20 in an ASA this yr. I am almost tempted to try a 5x or 6x lens...just because I think the clarifier takes some of the overall magnification away from my 4x. Who knows. I'm very happy with my 3D game right now though; I have room to improve for sure with what I have.

Re: RedhunterZ71...

Crow it sounds like you may see the targets better than I do!

Now, let's take a look at another archery shooting vision problem..............New Eyeglasses!

At the recent ATA show I spent about an hour talking the very bright and engaging Optometric physician Ricky Ferguson of Clear Target Lens. We discussed eyeglasses and archery at great length. Dr. Ferguson strongly recommended that my next pair of eyeglasses have Varilux Physio lens. I wound up buying one of Clear Targets 4X lens.

After a recent check-up with the optometrist and armed with a new eyeglass prescription I checked the prices at some of the larger eyeglass shops. One thing that gripes me about buying eyeglasses is that the price is pretty much the same whether you have insurance or if you are paying cash! Duh!

The price of Varilux Physio lens at Lencrafters.....drum roll please...............a mere $1063.00! This was the story with the other places I checked on Varilux Physio prices! I've got a friend that's in the optical business and his price was was about $825.00 for just the lens!

My buddy and I decided to order the Zeiss Varilux eqivalent HD lens with Titanium frames for the paltry sum of $610.00. I get the new glasses and wow I can see great out of them! I like them, just can't shoot out of them! Take them back and he orders a better lens with a wider progressive focus and that takes about a week! Get the new glasses and can see great out of them! Once again I can't shoot in them! What's the remedy for this situation?

I am going to have a special pair of eyeglasses made just for shooting that will most likely have distance vision in the upper part of the lens and a smaller bifocal set lower in the lens so I can read up close. Eyeglasses are the bane of shooting a bow..............then there is that lovely problem of fogging glasses while shooting a bow in humid conditions!

Anyone have a fool proof anti-fog for eyeglasses?

Yeah.....get someone with a little battery operated fan holding it next to your face blowing onto your glasses like RD does. ;)

It works! Unfortunately usually there is an RD attached to the fan!
