remington 870 express or mossberg 835

Neither.

My preference is for an automatic over a pump gun.

How many times have we heard it's often the "little" things that matter most? I've yet to see a pump that doesn't have some "rattle" noise while carrying, or sometimes when you just shift your position on an incoming bird. They can make enough "rattle" noise to spook game (like turkeys).

None of the 870's I have owned make rattle noise that I noticed... ever. If game you are going to shoot is close enough to hear the rattle, it should already be on the ground flopping.. :D  ;)

Maybe it's time to take notice. ;)
I've yet to see one that didn't have enough "play" in the pump action to make at least a little metallic noise just while routinely handling or carrying the gun, i.e. such as shifting the gun from one shoulder to the other while carrying, picking it up off your lap, etc.

This may not be a big deal for you, but is for me. :)
I hate to make any unnatural sound, such as anything metallic or velcro, while I'm hunting.

I have owned both - I would go with the 835; shot my first turkey with mine at 70+yards with it.

just check all of mine. NO rattles on the 870's other than the sling swivels on the 12 ga.

I have owned both, I would choose 870. Mossberg had pump issues. If not slamed up in position the shell would not fire. Mossberg also was a jaw breaker, 870 not near as bad. My buddy still has his mossberg, he has issues with it every now and then. But I do believe u cant beat the pattern of a 835. But I like my super mag better.

Some 3 1/2" shells won't eject after being fired from the 870 I bought last year. Seems to be a pretty common problem after searching the internet.

That's the only issue I have with it.

Polish your chamber just a little and that will solve your problem. Might as well do the barrel while your at it and help your patterns.

Haven't had any problems with mine shooting 3-1/2" shells. I only shoot it a few times a year though. I may should clean it, it's only been 5 or 6 years since the last time it was cleaned. Heck, that might be why it shoots so good.... :D

Thanks, but I did that prior to the season. I didn't have an issue when I went back to the 3" shells, so that's what I will use going forward.

I have both. 870 is much better made, and doesnt rattle like a Mossberg. Safety is also much easier to get off on the 870. Personally my 835 patterns better though with the overbored barrel. But the Remi is so much better made.
