This will be my second year turkey hunting, and I am addicted. I bought a Remington super mag 870 today. The guy give me a kicks TG 640 for $30. It was the only size he had. I have read through the threads and it seems the 660 is the favorite choice for this gun. My question is with the 640 choke what is my best starting point shell wise? If a different size is what I need then I will go that route, but I'm wanting to attempt to pattern the gun with this choke. Thanks the advice I get on here is always great and reliable.

According to Kicks web site .640 is for card shooting #8+#9, all around they recommend .665, .660 for 3 1/2" #5. Now that being said your gonna have to spend a little time and money. If it were me I'd used the test everyone else has used and make that my starting point. Buy a Kicks Gobbling Thunder choke in .660 and shoot Winchester 3"1/2" Longbeard XR in #5 or #6. and then shoot maybe 3" #5 or #6 and I think you will be happy. Good Luck, Have Fun, and remember dont get to caught up in all this stuff. Dead is Dead and 30 yrds. and closer any legal shot size will do.IMO

One more thing I do is I check the point of aim .The way I do this is I have a .640 for my moss.500 and I will take a cheap game load and shoot it at 15yds this should almost cut a hold and show poi before I send the high dollar stuff down rang . I would pair up a .660 with long beard 3" 5s and give him a dirt nap. Good luck whatever you decide.

Hey we all started somewhere and when you hunt turkeys you never stop being a rookie. About that choke I would keep it if you ever go to a turkey shoot it comes in handy .good luck this season

Also Jman is right. I shoot a Nikon Monarch Red dot because of just what he is talking about. My 935 turkey barrel fiber sight shot 3" high and I could not get it adjusted out so just put a scope on it. Everyone raves about the Bushnell Fire Fly. I like my Nikon but if I didnt have so much money tied up in my current set up, I'd go with the Burris Fast Fire III.

I'd just be sure the load you are using is OK for that constriction and then shoot some paper and make sure the patterns are good. No need to spend lots of money on different loads to get the highest # of pellets, unless you really want to.

I to would go with a 660 and lead is fine. if you can find long beard they are shooting lights out. but there is several loads out there that are good. don't worry about asking everyone was there at some point. the more you know before you get out there the better chance you have out there man.

My own personal best in 870 comes with .665 choke and #5 shot, if you are not satisfied with the others give it a try. In my SX3 with .665 and longbeards #5's the pattern was so tight at 40 yards I cannot hunt with it. I use supreme HV #5's, when I run out I will buy a more open choke and use Longbeard #5's. Start with some 2 3/4 inch shells at 12 to 15 yards and adjust your POA and POI. Put a 1" square up and shoot at it until you can shoot the square out, you might need more than 1 square. After that go to 40 yards and use your turkey loads, it will save a lot of recoil on your shoulder and expensive turkey loads.

On the kicks website it says no returns and no refunds on the 640 choke. They shouldn't include it in the GT line if they tell you on the website that the choke is not for use in hunting but in card games. JMO

Guns can/will shoot a little, even 2 exact models... I bought my Kicks based on the chart they had on their website. For the Rem. 870sm they suggested the .665 with lead #5's. I have no complaints so far....

Here is my 40yd (measured) pattern with the Kicks .665 & Win. Sup. HV 3.5" #5's and Rem. 870sm with 26" barrel (pre-polish):

I suspect the Win. Long Beard XR shells would be even better....

I shoot the supreme HV #5 and the longbeard #5 will be a little tighter yet, I chose to keep shooting the supreme HV #5's because I did not want to buy a more open choke to shoot the longbeard #5's. I don't intend to take a 50 or 60 yard shot so it doesn't make any difference which one I shoot. Good Luck.

Took it back and the guy didn't have a kicks in another size. I took a Jellyhead 665. I then went to walmart and bought some 3' 5shot LB shells. I then went and shot 2 3/4 shells to find my POI and adjust. I then shot a paper target at 40 yards....and wow. I'm happy.
