Probably my first post in the turkey forum since I've been a member in 2005. Turkeys have never peaked my intrest. Been having alot more turkeys showing up on our property over the past few years. Was thinking of trying to kill my first and get my 5 yr old into it. I was thinking of doing it with the only shotgun I own. A tri star 410 g2. Was gonna get some of those tss rounds which is crazy expensive. Read good stuff on them. Was going to get a xxfull tss turkey choke. Am I wasting money or would I be better off using something else. My dad has several 20ga and 12ga. Which is why I've never bought any shotguns. Was thinking of putting a red dot on it also. That's the shotgun I have.

A 410 build is fine. It's all up to you on the gauges now with the ammo out there. I personally hunt with 20s and will hunt with a 28 this year.

I have that 410 and it does pretty good I dove hunt with it I haven't turkey hunted with it yet.

Steven's makes a single shot with a red dot on it for very cheap.
 
I had a savage 301T in 410 and it would flat out kill em. A member on here was looking for one for his daughter so I sold it to him ammo , set up and ready to hunt. If I remember correctly he text me that she killed two last season with the 410! Get it set up and it will do the job. I shot Federal TSS #9 out of it.
 
I have only killed one turkey with a .410 and that was my dad's old 1960'ish Stevens single shot. I wanted to do it just to say I did it with dad's old gun. 20 yard short tss #9. Looked like you smacked it in the head with a hammer, didn't even flop. If I were going to be doing a lot of walking, .410 is what I'd be toting. I'd probably use it anyway but not sure the barrel can handle much of the tss loads.
 
After seeing what my sons 410 has done to turkeys I'm convinced it's all you need anymore. Yes absolutely get the #9 TSS that's the load that makes the 410 more than capable.

EXACTLY my thoughts. Its fun to say you did but other then that I have ZERO interest. I have decked out SUPER nice 20 gauges I love and have no plans to put them in the closet for a 410.

Having said that, I did buy a cheap stevens 410 this year ONLY because my 12 year old daughter now says she wants to actually shoot one. Shes to small for my 20 gauge so the 410 fits the bill just great. Once she is big enough for the 20 Ill sell off the 410
 
My main gun is a 21" youth 870 with old Heavyweight #7's.


My 410 with Apex Ninjas throws a better pattern than any 3.5" 12 gauge with lead that I've been around. I don't carry it a ton because it's a semiauto and I just don't care for them but I have 0 doubts its ability to kill turkeys.

I did put a .385" comp-n-choke in my 410. The Apex were better than Federal and Browning by a a large margin.

Oh I agree I love subgauges and NEVER plan to use a 12 again, but a 410 still has some limitations vs a 20 is all I mean. Yes the recent ammo additions make it a great option if someone wants to but it will never be as lethal as a 20 or even a 28 gauge.

Now a 28 gauge is something one day I may get into

I bought a Stevens 301 put a Burris FF3 and Indian creek choke and shoot rouge tss 9.5s it is a killin machine I've had it for 2 years n killed some special birds with it, biggest Rio, birthday bird and bird on my own land, they don't flop with a 410. I use a 20 for most places but it's hard to put that 410 down can't wait for one of my kids to be able to shoot one with it!
