Scope

I dont like a scope on mine, but I use and have used, hiviz adjustable, Williams fire sights, and limbsaver adjustable. I like the hiviz the best but those limbsavers are good to. I didn't care for the Williams but they worked

I'm going to try a scope this year I think I shot a buudy of.mine sbe2 with a scope on it the other day and I really liked it so I'll probably go with that rather then a eotech or speed bead for this year at least to try it. I'm getting the Leopold vx1 with the turkey reticle.

I don't like a normal scope personally. Just to much recoil on a shotgun and I really don't want a black eye. I do like the idea of the ability to magnify though but just not my cup of tea.

I have been using a FF3 for a while and it's a good set up and small

Been using one for several years.... Really like it.

From personal experience.... you don't want a scope propelled by a 3.5" turkey load to hit you on the brow.....

I had a regular scope and a red-dot scope on a turkey gun once..... parted with both .... scopes can hinder a follow-up shot or rushed shot (cost me a HUGE gobbler with 12"+ beard at LBL trying to "get him in the scope" as he was leaving) and they don't feel too good when they bust your eyebrow.

If you must have an optic, a reflex sight like the Fast Fire 2 or 3 would be my choice for vision/field of view purposes.

Otherwise, I would just shoot the factory bead.... try shooting some chokes/loads and check your POA/POI.

Let's not forget the eotech.... Quality scope. Will be my next big purchase as far as turkey gear goes..

I was going to mention it.... but it is more expensive and too bulky for my liking.... JMHO.

I have a Nikon Turkey Pro on my SX3 and love it. Wouldn't hunt without a scope.
Most of the true turkey scopes will have a longer eye relief and shouldn't come close to hitting you with the recoil.

Well a leupold vari x iii 1.75 x 6 will hit ur eye with nitro 3 1/2 loads.

I love a scope and normally wouldnt get hit in the face with it but I did get in a crazy slouched up position once to shoot a gobbler and got cut pretty bad. Im really thinking about switching to a FF3 this year.

I think optical sights are the best thing since sliced bread.

All things being equal, I prefer the traditional type scope (with long eye relief), and believe the mistake most make is opting for too much magnification.

My main two turkey guns are set-up for different purposes.

One is a 12 ga autoloader topped with a 1.5-4.5x scope. I keep the scope set on 1.5x, and prefer this sight over the Burris FastFires (which I also like very much). This particular gun is very heavy in weight, and mainly used in early season and/or when I'm not having to carry it too far. If there is any negative to the traditional scope for me, it's only that it adds a little more weight.

My other turkey gun is what I call my "Run & Gun" turkey gun. :)
In trying to keep weight to a minimum, it's topped with a Burris FastFire. I can't imagine anyone not liking a Burris FastFire better than factory beads or "open" rifle type sights. But just in terms of "sighting", I still prefer that 1.5x traditional scope for turkey hunting. Meanwhile, the Burris FastFire is over a half pound less weight than any traditional scope, so it's my choice for a lightweight turkey gun.

Should also add that my "Run & Gun" is a 20 gauge, and I see myself using it more and more than the big heavy 12. With the 20 ga Federal Heavyweight 1 1/2 oz turkey loads, it is absolutely more deadly on turkeys than any 12 gauge shooting lead turkey loads. Being very effective out to 45 yards, light as a feather, reliable & precise aiming point, doesn't get much better than that.

But back to optics, the only ones I do NOT like are the "red dot" type scopes. They just have too much "footprint" and are prone to not being as reliable. By contrast, the Burris FastFire "reflex" sight is extremely reliable, and requires no adjustment for low or high lighting (neither do traditional scopes).

But that's not a unique thing to a scoped turkey gun.
I've that happen twice with a deer rifle, and the worst cuts came from a 30/30 rifle, rather than some big magnum gun.

One other thing.
You will get a little less recoil from autoloaders.
I don't think my heavy 12 ga autoloader with 3 1/2" loads kicks as bad as a 12ga Mossberg pump shooting 2 3/4" loads!

while i agree it is MUCH more likely to happen on a shotgun shooting turkey loads. The recoil energy is not even close to the same...example a 270 is in the 17-20lb range. a 12g shooting turkey loads is up in the 70-80lb range. In addition it is much more likely a person doesn't get all the way down on the stock shooting at turkeys just due to how you sit on the ground so much.

Thanks guys. I have a Mossberg 500 and I usually just shoot 3" shells. It only has the factory choke so I was just thinking about improving it a little this year. Will definitely check out the optics everyone suggested. I appreciate everyone's information.

also highly recommend another choke you'd be surprised what a good choke will do for a turkey gun.

The Leupold you just listed has a 3.3-4.4 inch eye relief and is a rifle scope!
The Nikon Turkey Pro made more for turkey hunting has a full 5 inches of relief!
MUCH, MUCH DIFFERENT!!!!
