Well boys, my season is over. I had a relapse with my back, and it's not good. I turned over in bed one night last week, stretched some, and felt it pull. It's been a little worse every day. In hindsight, even though I was careful and didn't fall, I didn't do myself any favors by chasing turkeys the last few weeks, but hindsight is 20/20 and still probably wouldn't have got totally better as it's been bothering me since November. It got real bad on Thursday, called the doc, and he worked me in that afternoon. He said that he wasn't surprised that I was back due to how bad the MRI showed although it had been getting better. His recommendation now is to fix it and move on. He said it wouldn't get better now and shouldn't have in the first place. He's not a surgery pusher and highly respected doctor so I'm scheduled for surgery this coming Thursday. Please keep me in your prayers. It sucks but could be worse. At least my son and I both tagged a bird.

Please keep the stories coming with details as I will have to live through them the rest of the year. He said 2 weeks to go back to work to sit at my desk and 6 for full recovery. Anybody had surgery for a herniated disc? Muddyboots? I think we're around the same age and know you add some type of back surgery last year or the year before.

I'm keeping my head up and Happy Easter the everybody.

Man I hate that. By your title I had hoped that you had killed a nemesis bird as "season wrecker" is what I call birds that you hunt numerous times and they begin to take over your mind.

I hope the surgery is a success and is nothing but a blip going forward.

Dang man I'm glad you at least got to get out a few times after the birds. Hope the surgery goes smoothly and you heal up quick. Prayers sent

I had a laminectomy first. Worked perfect for exactly a year. Then bam right back in the same shape. Last June he did a discectomy and it feels as best as it has ever been. My surgeon tells me that a year is the magic time. If no pain in a year ur good. So we will see. U basically have 3 choices - tough it out which I made it about 6 months before I cried uncle. 2nd option is surgery which is not 100 per cent and after seeing all those people in the waiting room with multiple surgeries I have decided I'm not doing another one. 3rd is take the drugs. It's a bad word these days but u have to weigh quality of life. Nobody can tell you what is right for u. It's not all roses and lollipops. I wish u luck. No quick fix. Just do what's best for you and ur family.

Also don't sweat the surgery. It's a cakewalk. I got to the surgery center at 5:30 in the morning and was back home at 2:30 in the afternoon and we live 2 hours away so the surgery part is ez. I woke up and didn't hurt anywhere. I asked the nurse am I I drugged up? She said no why. I replied pain is gone. She said well that's what sopposed happen. Lol. So don't dread the surgery. I had surgery on Friday went back to work on Monday. But I don't have a physical job so just take care of urself and u will b fine. Keep us updated. Also if they give u some gabapentin or lyrica to take I wouldn't. That's some weird medicine.

A lot of disc injuries resolve well with physical therapy. It just depends on the extent and finding a physical therapist that knows what they are doing. I am a physical therapist and see disc injuries often. MRI's can be scary, but there is a lot of research that shows that it's not always the whole story. Either way, I hope you get some relief.

I actually went the PT route last year to start, and it really didn't help. I slipped and nearly fell about 6 weeks ago and blew it plumb out. It was getting some better which the surgeon was surprised based on the MRI, however, he wasn't surprised that it relapsed. He's not a surgery pusher at all and knew I didn't want to unless last resort. He actually makes his patients wait 2 wks before seeing him unless it's an emergency to start in case they get better. He said at this point it was my only option to get better.

Gotcha! Glad he sent you that route first! I've just seen a lot of cases that never tried pt first before going under the knife. We have pretty good luck resolving disc issues overall, but not everyone gets better with pt. If you need physical therapy in the future do your best to find a manual therapist that will put their hands to use each visit and not just do exercises. Sounds like you have a good doctor from what you describe though!

Thanks for the advice. Appreciate it.

Thanks. The original doc put me through two rounds of steroids and then PT for a couple months with no major improvement. It was getting a little better until I lost my footing and nearly fell. I felt it pull that morning and been bad ever since. I went to a very good PT, but he did excercises. I probably didn't take it as serious then either. Being from Crossville, you may know the surgeon. He's from tier 1 in Cookeville.

I'm not too familiar with the cookeville doctors right now. I've worked in tullahoma since I have been out of school. I am hoping to move to cookeville this summer though to be closer to family.

It's been proven through history that women's a mystery! Popeye

Sore and droggy but surgery went well. Pain in leg which has been at a 10 in several places for a week and hurting since Nov is virtually gone. I have just a lil twinge ever now and then. Should be turkey hunting next week. :) No, my wife asked the doctor when I could go fishing among other things but didn't ask about turkey hunting. She said I was done this year. I agree as I don't wanna do this again.
