Today started out great, heard several on the roost in different directions, sat on a ridge top at dawn and called in 2 toms spitting drumming and gobbling, and then trying to get a clean shot through the bushes, putt putt they busted me and were gone.
Later morning I heard a couple of gobbles way off in the distance
2.30 pm was at the truck to hydrate and blew my crow call and a gobbler hammered right down the holler next to my truck. I set up and called, had hen answer from another direction but neither the hen nor gobbler showed and the gobbler never sounded again.
Spent all afternoon sitting various places, occasionally making some quick loud calls and could not get a bird to answer or even gobble on its own. I saw a couple small groups of hens and that's about it. It was strangely quiet in the turkey woods today, except for early morning when it was in the 30s. It warmed up to the 70s and got quiet. Not even a gobble looking for a hen to roost with like last year. What's up with that?
