Took my daughter out after some crappie today. I've struggled the last few weeks and today was a little better with 9 keepers in the boat. As a bonus I boated 5 huge gray crappies. They're fun on 4lb test lol. It seems I catch one about every trip out, but 5 in one day was crazy

Never heard them called gray crappie before. I catch a lot while sauger fishing. They can be fun. At least they don't slime everything up like catfish.

we've caught them up over ten lb fishing for walleye in the Holston. dang things will grab a grub or Shad Rap just as quick as anything out there. they'll dang near come up on the bank after crawdads, lol.
nice eating size goos. bleed em, ice em and grill them like dude on other thread did his redfish. or blacken em.
I catch them every time I'm crappie fishing. I see them on livescope.. and can't help but cast at them. Not going to lie.. catching them on light rods is fun!

Fun fish. Fight so much like a flathead it's like a game guessing which you've got until you see the first flash when they come up. And WTM is right. I was surprised how good they are when cooked right. I was lied to as a child, I swear. I was told yellow bass and those were no good to eat. So many wasted meal opportunities.

What is the best way to cook a drum?
basically any way you want. stripped and boiled in crab boil like shrimp, fried, blackened, grilled on the half shell. filet one out and they look just like that redfish dude keeps posting pics of.
the key is to clip the gills and bleed for 5 minutes then place on ice immediately. they are not like other fish you can keep in the livewell, theyll die and start to spoil almost immediately.
like trapper john mentioned, id rather keep the yellow bass and throw crappie back but thats just
me.
Best way is probably how my grandfather used to. Scream out loud "don't let it in the boat!!!" and then poke the air bladder while getting it unhooked with the home made dehooker so it doesn't drip any of its stinky slimy mess into your boat
