God blessed us with this 8 pt. on Saturday afternoon (1620ish). I was out in the back throwing the ball with the dogs...wearing shorts, crocks and a sweatshirt...beer in one hand, thrower in the other. Looked out in the field and saw antlers on the far end of the property. Quickly ran and put the dogs up, yelled in the door to my wife "buck, buck" (or something like that), ran to the shop and grabbed the .243, ran back out to the fence, laid the Rem. 700 on the post...."bang". It was a 317 yard shot. I had previously ranged the tree line nearby at 300 yds. (rifle zeroed at 200), held on his back and let'r fly. Between my heartrate and the smoke I didn't see him jump or run so I was afraid I missed him. Looked again and saw feet in the air and a white belly in the grass (barely visible). He looked like he was trying to get up so I sent another one. My wife and daughter were watching all this unfold from the house. They came running out, me...arms in the air like I just won a gold medal "I got him". Family hug and then got the keys to the tractor. Decided to let him expire before running out to recover him. Finally got hands on him. Wasn't the "BIG BUCK" I had in my head but it's a trophy to me. This is my first TN buck after a few years and our first buck on the new property. It was a special night to say the least. My 2 1/2 year old was so excited. She even took part in the field dressing. God has blessed us with these memories that will last a lifetime. All my daughter wanted to do was look at her buck yesterday. She kept sticking her finger in the bullet hole and saying "owy". haha Had to explain to her why I shoved 2 bags of ice in it's body 🤣 It was a great day.
