Talking to myself 😂

Every year

Me: I don't know why I can't kill big deer

Also me: because you overhunt your stands during bow season

Me: that's true

Also me : and you kill 2.5 and 3.5year olds before they get mature

Me: you make good points but shut up already 😂
Me the day before MZ season opens: I'm not killing any buck that isn't mature.

Me after Thanksgiving with the rut winding down: I'm killing the next non-yearling that walks by.

Me during the first two weeks of rut:
"All those other guys can pass up 4.5 year olds, so can I!"

Me on Thanksgiving weekend, trigger finger and right eye twitching uncontrollably as a decent buck walks up and the crosshairs are wavering on his chest:

"BOOM!!!!……..okay, I'm a meat hunter, yeah, that's it….."

I haven't hunted my favorite spot. That will change next Saturday! Took a different approach to this bow season. Learned some things and missed a deer so decent year for East Tn.

You can't kill big deer if you shoot good deer! Truest statement I have ever been told.
Actually, I disagree.

Sometimes I'll shoot a 2 1/2 year-old. Sometimes a 5 1/2 year-old. All depends on my mood and what presents itself.

Some years, we shoot a fair number of 2 1/2 year-olds off our place. Some years, we don't. But we still grow mature deer at the same rate as we always have. Doesn't really make a difference biologically.

I'm quitting bow hunting cause I SUCK at bow hunting. I'd be better off attaching bayonets and charging them.
I quit bow-hunting because we were educating deer to our hunting while pursuing them with a low success-rate weapon. Once we quit bow-hunting and our opening day became the first day of MZ season, our success rate on good bucks went sky-high. Don't miss bow-hunting one bit.

I'm gonna take my bow / crossbow money and invest in a muzzle loader. Very good point you make.

I've never shot a MZ so there's that.

And you cant make guys understand this!

The key is simply not overshooting the total buck population. Keep the total harvest of bucks at a low enough percentage of the total population and it doesn't matter what age the harvested bucks are.

Of course, this doesn't touch on the subject of high-grading young bucks, which is and can be a real problem, if top-end antlered mature bucks is your goal.

Agree 💯

I love bow hunting so I'll keep bow hunting. But I cannot argue with your logic. Many a time I've sat in my stand with a bow wishing it were some type of gun season. Seems every year I helplessly have to watch a giant meander around in front of my stand, just out of bow range, but would have been an easy tag if I could have used a gun.

Another good reason - too frustrating!

I love to bow hunt, BUT... I never bow hunt my private land. I own it, and try to stay out of it until opening day of MZ. My issue is I need to do some habitat improvement but do not have the $$ or equipment to do it.

I always hunt public with my bow. I go to high odds places to catch a few does passing through. I shoot 1-2 if I can and if a big buck comes by I just thank the lord that it was there. I have had it happen a couple of times, just couldn't get a shot.
