If this secondary doesn't improve I think all the hype is for naught. A good QB with good receivers is going to pick them apart at will. The Akron QB completed 32 of 44 passing attempts and at one time was 12 of his last 13. I'm pretty sure Akron's receivers aren't SEC quality. I guess the positive side is there are only 2 great offenses on the schedule and this could still be a great season. I just HATE seeing the Vols be uncompetitive against the Updykes and UGA. If I was Heupel I would be hiring a new or additional secondary coach immediately.

Yeah it's the weak spot for sure. Not sure if its the coach or the personnel. I just went back and looked at the last 3 recruiting class zero 5* DBs zero 4* Dbs
The last 4* DB the vols signed was in 2020 and he jumped ship after a year.

Hepuel will never have problems getting offensive skill positions. And they have actually recruited well on the Dline since Hepuel the Linebacks and DBs not so much.

We were playing a basic zone defense last night. There is always going to be open receivers playing zone. We held them to 2 field goals. I couldn't be more pleased with our defense.

Hopefully you can say the same thing after the alabama and Georgia games. I'd love nothing more than to eat my words.

We got Florida and LSU to deal with first.
If you read my post I was specifically referring to elite QBs with good receivers picking the secondary apart. Florida and LSU don't fit that criteria. Since I'm not on the team I can look ahead and discuss other games. Me looking ahead doesn't affect the team at all.

HEY we have a game to play this weekend. Stop looking ahead. You do this often from what I hear

I been busy…did we beat Akron?? Stop looking past opponents 🙄😂
I must profusely apologize. I didn't realize a casual fan looking ahead could cause the team to lose. I stand corrected. I will never look ahead. And whomever starts these preseason prediction threads should be tarred and feathered! No wonder the Vols haven't won a NC in 24 years. It's the fans' fault!

Heard on sec network one of the clowns said " Tennessee has a well balanced team. The offense will score 40 and the defense won't give up yardage "…..😂

I don't know if many of the secondaries when we get in the heart of SEC play will look good/great against Bama and UGA you will have some that due just OK ......most they will make look bad.

Ok bud. I'm still happy with our progress.

I agree and that's my point. If Akron can make them look bad, bama and UGA are going to have a field day. No pun intended.

Yeah, if we don't get somewhat of a pass rush against those teams I don't think are secondary has a chance.

You can have elite cover guys, but if there is no pressure, someone will get open.

I was in the end zone, and it appeared that when we played man later in the game, there weren't many open receivers.

I do like our db's ability to tackle so far. Our D is still subject to breakdowns, but, as mentioned, it's better than last year. We can't afford to lose anybody though.

I hope I'm wrong but I believe they were relaxed last night just cause of the blowout. Yea they got up on them but I don't believe the "urgency" was there to risk injuries in a game that was over rather quickly. Now when we start to play SEC opponents. I have faith they will adjust to their competition and HOPEFULLY will not be made to look silly.
