Time with my Grandfather

I was lucky enough to spend a few days in the woods with my Grandfather. The plan was to hunt Saturday-Wednesday but unfortunately my trip got cut short by a call from the wife. Our new pup is having some issues and is in rough shape so I was needed at home.

My Grandad is still out there and is going to try to hunt this evening and tomorrow morning.

We drank way too many beers, a bunch of whiskey and might not be welcome back at the Mexican joint in Watertown so I'd say we had a great trip!

On Sunday I was lucky enough to get a shot at an 8pt that isn't huge but he's the biggest deer I've ever been able to kill. Last night I was able to kill a doe.

My grandfather has been in deer most sits but hasn't been able to get a shot. Hopefully he connects tomorrow morning and I can run back to the lease to help him get his deer.

A special thank you is in order to @Dbllunger. Buddy, you are very generous and once again I feel like I owe you one. Having my grandad on the verge of tears when he called me to find out if the gunshot he heard was coming from me is something I'll cherish forever. I wouldn't have had a crack at that deer if it wasn't for you.

Memories made!

You are welcome my friend. Hope your grandfather gets a shot on one soon. Once again great shot on that buck and congratulations. That's one of my stands I've always loved and shared with a few here. Lol...it's a deer highway through there. Always has been.

Enjoy these times…cherish them forever my friend.

My big papaw died young. I'll never forget sitting 4 deep in a single man shooting house or playing cards with him at the camp in south Bama. He would owl hoot from the front porch and get every owl around hooting while I was huntin. I hunt with him every time I go in the form of his picture nowadays. Now that I'm 30 with my first child on the way, it would be his first great grandchild. What I would give to drink some whiskey on the porch of the camp and smoke a cigar with him while tellin story after story.

Did he end up getting him one?
Nope. He had a chance to shoot a few does on his last couple sits but I had already told him that I was sending him back with the meat from my two deer so he was waiting on a nice buck.

I brought home two deer hearts, a set of antlers and memories that will last forever.

He went home home with some deer meat, a smile and the expensive bourbon I hid behind the coffee maker while I was packing up to leave.

One more picture of the buck I shot that gives a better look at the rack.
