Stating the obvious, a head coach hire is important whether we are talking high school, college, or NFL, but the splash of the hire seems more important from a college perspective. That's the guy who sets the tone, leads the recruiting, etc. The chief ambassador so to speak. In the NFL, the splash isn't that important. The GM is equally important. Maybe more important as that's the guy who drafts the 53 man roster, as the coach doesn't get to pick his 20-25 4 and 5 stars every year. You can have a great recruiter in college who is more of a CEO, rather than a X and O guy. Dabo Swinney is rumored to be more of the CEO type and not so great when it comes to the Xs and Os, but is obviously very successful. That wouldn't translate well to the NFL. Looking at the other hires, I don't think any so far, or that will come with the Lions and Colts, will be viewed by any of those fan bases as "heck yes!" hires. When Belicheck was hired by the Patriots, I doubt those fans said "heck yes!" He was hired after a second go round as a DC and after three of four losing seasons in Cleveland. Look at the other three coaches in this years AFC and NFC championship games. None of them were "splashy" hires. The one splashy hire was Gruden to Oakland/Las Vegas, but Vrabel is a heads and tails better hire. Gruden hasn't coached in 10 years and is old now. Vrabel is in touch with today's players and the game. I think his comments about the "college farm system," while being taken wholly out of context, are very prescient. Richard LeBeau is a legend, and one of the greatest Buckeyes of all time, but he played on Woody's 1957 national championship team for goodness sake. He's a bit rigid in his schemes. When Vrabel spoke about being flexible and multiple in defensive fronts, that makes a whole lot of sense and that's the Patriot way and has worked for them for years. What I've heard is flexibility from Vrabel and that's the game today. "Exotic smash mouth" is just semantics for old school.
I think it's a great hire, but time will tell.
