Is there anyone here that hunted deer in Tennessee in the 1950's? If so, where did you hunt, what did you hunt with, and were you successful?

My Dad hunted in Tellico/Citico from the early 50's until he moved to California in 1958. He moved back in 1961 and hunted there again until 1969. Then he did not hunt again until taking me to Morgan County in 1983.

He died in Sept. of 2023. I am going to hunt with his 1949 manufactured Winchester 94 in 30-30. I have hunted with it a few times over the years. He bought me a 1979 manufactured one and gave it to me for Christmas of 1980.

It is my most treasured rifle and it has taken many deer, hogs, coyotes, and one bear.

Good luck on your hunt! Hope you connect! My Dad has my Grandfather's old Winchester 94 in 30-30...killing a deer with that rifle is on my bucket list!
I've killed a lot with mine but never one with Dad's. I also have his brother's 94 in 32 Winchester Special. I've killed one with it.

My dad didn't in the 50's that I remember but he did in the 60's. He bought a featherweight model 70 Winchester 3006 in 1959. He hunted in the west for mule deer every year in the 60's but my first memory of Tennessee deer for him was along the Tn River counties in the west part, Big Sandy and around there but that was like 1970 or so but I guess he did before that.

Where were the first huntable deer populations in West TN?

Think about back then as compared to today..... I've talked with guys that hunted back when the first seasons were opened, and they said if you saw a deer track you got excited, now pretty much in most places, if just sit still for a bit a deer will walk by.

My grandpa was hunting them here in the 50's. Running with hounds was just how was it done. Way before my time but he knew very crossing or gap there was from all those races.
