I posted this in the general forum, and thought I would bring it here for the bow hunters. For the seasoned archers, does it sound like my bow, arrow, and bh choice is a good match? Or should I have went with a 340 spine? I'm not sure how much hunting I will do with this setup versus my Excal crossbow.

I've been shooting 2-3 times/week with my Matthew Outback that my ex bil gave me a couple of months ago. As the season nears, I will increase my shooting to 5-6 days/week. My longest shot thus far has been 30 yards. My max will be 40 yards. This will be the first year I've actively hunted with a compound since my accident in '91. The challenge will be setting up in a location that will give me a high probability of the deer crossing in front of me and to my left.

Matthew Outback
28in draw
68lbs weight
Easton ST Excel 400 arrows
Tru-Fire Release

I haven't started shooting broadheads yet, but am planning on shooting the 100 grains NAP Killzone BH's. This was my first group this morning at 20 yards. 6 arrows. My first group of the day tends to be the tightest.

If your arrow length is cut correctly you are underspined using the .400. Your ideal spine is in the neighborhood of .3600-.3750, if you are in between it is always best to go up to the stiffer spine. Nice group....keep it up, but remember it is the quality of the session, not the quantity of arrows in the session. Also, I would start shooting at individual dotsgrouping arrows like that gets expensive and troublesome. ;)

Thanks TNDeerGuy. I'm thinking about dropping my draw weight down to around 65lbs. This may give me an edge if the deer is at an angle that prevents me from turning in my w/c, but one that I can still settle my pins on while maintaining good form. Would this bring my arrows, 400, into the correct spec? Thanks

I dont want to drop the draw weight that much. What program did you use to come up with your spine suggestion? I went to the Easton's site and they showed a 400 to be the correct size. Not saying you're incorrect, just wondering. Thanks for your help
