Hey ladies and gents, my father in law and I are talking about trying our hand with Trout fishing on the Caney this upcoming spring.

I have never been, and he hasn't been in 30 years or so. Any tips or advice you could give me on the subject?

Trout Magnets will keep you quite entertained. Let them drift over a hole that has slightly moving water. Riffles after a tree blowdown are great because they move the float and cause it to bob up and down, giving the lure natural motion. You can also take the float off to let it sink more as it drifts and jig up and down. That's a really productive way to catch them too.

2lb flouro leader is essential for it to work best, especially in such clear water like the Caney.

Avoid Happy Hollow like the plague on a weekend after 9am. In early Spring, you may not have as many of the kayak shuttles because it'll still be someone cool but if you go later in the Spring when it's hot, you'll hate it. The kayak shuttle companies have all but completely ruined such a great fishery. Non stop, all day, waves of kayak/tube shuttle floats disrupting what you wanted to be a peaceful morning of fishing.

Without mentioning any location names, do some research on the access points downstream of Happy Hollow, they get far less traffic from the kayak/tube rental shuttles. You'll still have trout, and you'll have a quieter time. The very next access downstream from there still gets quite busy, so try the ones even downstream from there.
