Turkey Calls

One day I might spend over $20 on a call. I do like the sound of a custom call and really like the idea of supporting a small business but I just dont like the idea of spending that kinda of money.

Here is why; one day I might be using my moldy old primos double reed from 7 years ago (soak it in scope and its like new) and I have the birds fired up. Next day, same call same spot and the birds dont do a thang...public and private lands. Either I suck really bad every other day (the other day I just suck) or turkeys are just being turkeys and my calling doesnt really matter when they dont wanna play.

If you buy a custom call I bet u want regret it, just dont loose it like I would!

No matter what you do though...do jot hunt out of a ground blind or use decoys[emoji12]

You can get a good custom call for around $20. Lonie Sneed makes some awesome handmade pot calls. They can talk turkey. They run around 20 each. I have a green glass and a hot hen slate. And, I have lost a good custom call. Fell out of my vest into a creek. I was so upset. I had only had that call about 2 weeks. Either way, you can't go wrong with a good custom call. Old gobbler and gobbler nation have a lot of good call makers.

i loose 3-4 strikers every year just part of it. its all part of the hunt, you can get plenty of custom to semi-custom calls in the 20-25 range..shouldnt not buy something that is better overall just because you think you will lose it. heck it may help you take better care of your stuff lol

IMO, I think a tube call is the easiest reliable call you call have in your pocket, Papaw taught me how to make one from a piece of cane off the creek.
Sinces those days I've made them from just about everything from a pill bottle to a expensive piece of wood trying to make something to hand down to the kids or other young hunters. Now in 45 years of Turkey hunting (Since I was 7) I truly have made every kind and had every kind of call known to a Turkey hunter and have had some high dollar calls mainly just due to its craftsman work and I thought it was purty or the maker was a Grand Champion or something.

When I was a little feller my Papaw thought me the craft of making a Tube call out of a piece of cane from the French Broad and since that day I've made them from everything that is in the shape of a tube and all work to a degree but hollow plastic /PVC/pill bottle or wood for different tones is best. My Dad would have never spent or allowed me to spend money on "Silliness" as he would say on a Turkey call and the man could call in a turkey better than any human I've ever hunted with, in a time when turkey were far and few between in east tn. but we killed a bird every year. And Papaw or Dad that I'm aware of never bought a call. May have swapped around a pocket knife for one or another call on the front lawn of the Sevier Co. Court house on Saturday morning which are very fond memories for me as a little boy. I didnt get off the home place much :D . I was a Victim to a Thieve while on a hunt a couple of years ago and some pill head Jack $%^ broke in my truck and took my vest that had about 40 years of my favorite calls in it. Some home made and some from great custom makers. Once I grew up and became successful I did buy some purty things I never had privilege to as a young farm kid. But I found myself without a call in the middle of nowhere so that training Papaw gave me paid off. I had a empty pill bottle in the truck and rubber glove and thats all I needed. In less that 5 minutes had a great call and called in and killed a bird. I found this link and thought you guys might find it interesting and show you how easy it is to do and that a Tube call is easy and fast to make and sounds great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRVkU7Yb7G4. Happy hunting. You dont have to be rich and buy high dollar calls to be a great Turkey Hunter. IMO Dave.
