Turkey Kill or Not Killed (video)

He should have never let go when the bird had gathered its legs. A bad feeling when I'm sure, and made worse by his confidence right up until the moment of escape.

I don't have much good to say about that, other than YET another hunter worried about jaw dropping video footage, rather than making sure the bird died in the most humane way, and in short order. It was clearly obvious the turkey was alive (eyes wide open and beak constantly moving) and most likely in some sort of pain, at least to some degree. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Much? There is nothing good to say about it.

It's become mostly about the recognition on facebook & utube, rather than hunting ethics?

Despite the trend reversing a bit with some focus on "organic" food (wild game),
believe we're now seeing a reversal, whereby more non-hunters are becoming anti-hunters instead of non-hunters becoming hunters?

The way we "look" to the majority of voters (who are mostly either anti-hunters or non-hunters)
WILL greatly effect the future hunting opportunities we will have or have not.

I could hear the bird breathing... guy had him by the neck and could have flicked his wrist and finished the bird. Do people not pay attention to their birds when they shoot them...and I wonder how long he went and looked of that bird.

How do you think it's okay or even think the bird is dead when he is standing there while your holding its neck? That guy needs to find another hobby cause he clearly doesn't know what a dead bird looks like. Sad part is guy probably didn't find the bird after that and it went to waste. IDIOT!!! :bash:

Here's the million dollar question: why would one post a video of them making a piss poor decision/being an idiot to YouTube for the world to see? I just can't fathom the level of ignorance that takes. Are people out there dying for attention that bad? I made hundreds of mistakes early in my hunting career, and still do, but I be damned if I ever broadcast them to add insult to injury. SMH

yea I have some footage of some screw ups I don't upload because it's embarrassing...nothing as bad as that one though.

"So here's the rest of the story. The turkey hit the open field and it was like watching Jesse Owens until he dropped over the bank of a steep hill and vanished forever. I was dumbfounded. Scoured every direction for 8 hours. As a last ditch effort I pulled all my nearby trail cam chips and went back to the house. Sure enough, got him 3 minutes after I shot him crossing in front of one of my trail cameras - 500 yards away. He was heading east, probably to cross the road. I headed back out to search every inch of the woods between the cam and the street - nothing. The road was another 300 yards. So at a minimum that Tom went 800 yards. There was zero blood. I gave it my best effort.
I know that bird won't survive and I do feel bad about that. I'm not suicidal over it - stuff happens. I'm sure now that I shot him through the breast, broke his wing, and obviously never touched the vitals. I should have twisted his neck but what you didn't see is the bird actually went limp on the ground off the frame. I took my hands off him after I removed the arrow and laid him on the ground. He never moved. So I was convinced he was dead, watching the video there was plenty of clues he wasn't. But hell if I was paying attention at that point. I won't ever do that again.

You guys who like to be critical - have at it. Doesn't phase me. I like to post the real deal and appreciate others who do the same. If you don't like it - oh well - I'm not going to change. I've shot at least 20 turkeys with my bow and only lost one before this week. It happens. And I'm sorry, but that video is damn funny. If you're looking for a media hero who manicures his image by only displaying textbook perfection then you're going to be disappointed. I'm not that guy. Just think of all the discussion about shot placement, following up, etc. Priceless. I bet everyone who watches that video and reads this thread will never again assume a gobbler is dead. I know I won't.

Enough of that. I'm heading back to the blind now. I have more turkeys to shoot at. Hopefully I can redeem myself." - Pat Lefemine

Hate he got away. Sometimes things like that happen to all of us. I know several years ago my brother shot a big gobbler that dropped like a rock. We just knew he was stone dead. My brother goes up to him, leans his gun against a tree, then goes to pick him up. Out of nowhere the turkey shoots down this extremely steep hill like a rocket. We searched and searched for that thing for hours and never did find him.

That is for certain.

But most of us don't communicate it in a manner that becomes prime footage for anti-hunters to convert non-hunters into more anti-hunters, nor do we typically think it's "funny" when we inadvertently cause anything to suffer and/or die unrecovered.

Complete a##hat. I would end up in jail if I came across that guy in the woods or anyone like him. Unfortunately, that is what's out there these days.

Stuff happens in the world of hunting. Not a single hunter on here has not done something dumb or wounded an animal. We learn from our mistakes. We should be supporting one another here and not tearing down. We get enough of that from the antis. Cut the guy some slack. He was brave enough to bare all and was criticized for it. Shame on you.

I agree wholeheartedly....did he make a dumb decision?...yes...have I?...yes...have you?...

It seems as if his follow up post contained some good information. He wants to use his screw up to start some educational discussions with other hunters to inform them so that they don't make the same mistake, and in turn, hopefully, it keeps many other animals from suffering like this one did. 99% of what we have learned as hunters was from making mistakes, not because we were born perfect hunters.
