I have been out scouting three days since Saturday, and right now our turkey numbers are looking really good. I saw a lot of jakes last season so we may be in for a great season this year. This is in middle Tennessee south of Nashville.

What are the rest of you seeing?

Lawrence county is not covered up! im about two hours south of nashville and it seems to be up this year but not even 10 percent of what it was 10 years ago

My public land hunting spot last year had more jakes than gobblers for sure... however it was fairly popular with hunters so I'm hoping to find me a more secluded spot this year.

Muddyboots and Lawrence county folks,

What happened to your turkey numbers? Is this something others along the Tennessee/Alabama line have experienced, that is a decline in population from what it was 10 years ago?

I don't know what happened to all our turkeys. Used to it wasn't nothing for me to hear 10-15 different birds gobbling in one morning, maybe more but the past 3 years I'm lucky to hear 1 or 2 but it's not just on my farm a lot of people around here is the same way. I don't know what happened.

I am no scientist but numbers started declining when the started upping the limits and in the spring and killing hens in fall. I have no idea if that had anything to do with it or not i just no that is the time line. 10 years ago a good morning would be to hear 10 to 20 gobblers all morning long and see flocks of hens in the fall that were close to 100 birds. Now a good morning is to hear 4. In the fall the biggest flock of hens i saw las fall was 22. I think this year will be a little better.

Use to on my farm and neighbors farm it wasnt nothing to hear 30 gobblers every single morning then it got down to 15 then 5 now your lucky if you hear one on 1500 acres. Its like this in southern lawrence and southeast wayne couties. and i have discussed this with several game wardens and biologists all i could ever get was "were working on it" until yesterday i talked to one of lawrence countys main officers and was told after several studies that it was because of the chicken barns. The local barn owners have been spreading there chicken crap on hay fields and it carries some known disease. He told me that the disease stays in the ground for 4 years, He then proceeded to tell me that they are fixing to bust this wide open and put a hault to it. so maybe just maybe in another 10 years we will have a few birds. This seems accurate because we didnt have people spreading it until the last 10 years and Northern lawrence and wayne counties have tons of birds where southern portions dont.

You know where the markus farm is? My family owns it.

Is that the farm where the ginseng barns are?
