Tyreek Hill

Attitude goes both ways, and looking at the initial contact video, I would say TH had an immediate attitude. When someone acts squirrely during a stop, officers will often times ask you to get out, so you will be away from any weapons or prevent you from driving off. During a stop, if an officer asks you to get out, you must comply.

Very good article.

Correct. You must. But he didn't act squirrely during the initial encounter. It was pretty clear he's just an idiot driving too fast, not a threat to pull a weapon and start shooting. I full well realize how tough being a cop is. There is no amount of money you could pay me to do their job, even in my little small, sleepy town. But I also realize when I see someone do their job incredibly poorly. He told Tyreek to roll the window back down and Tyreek COMPLIED, but the cop decided to go on a power trip anyway and jerked him out of the car. It would've been different if he said "roll the window back down or I'm getting you out of the car" and Tyreek didn't comply, but he COMPLIED and the officer still went berserk.

That being said, take a good look at the cop that removed him from the car. Neck tat and his hands were completely tatted, and neither of their English was exactly what I would call native. Makes me wonder who they're hiring...

Miami as I've said is little Cuba !!! I know what it's like to be a minority when I last went to Miami . The motel didn't even have a newspaper in English all Spanish.

Read a good article a few years back where an attorney said the same thing - if ordered out, you must comply. The attorney also added one more line - "Lock the door when you exit the vehicle so they can't search it without your consent."

Hill did not put his window back down just before the cops took him out; the window was open a few inches. There are many cases when it is "pretty clear... that a driver is not a threat to pull a weapon and start shooting" and yet the person does just that. Tinted windows, shadows, and glare all can come into play and make it necessary for the window to be down so the police officers can have a good view of the person in the car.

I've been to Miami quite a number of times. Great Cuban and Puerto Rican restaurants there. Some don't have the menu in English. Some of the waitresses don't speak English. In that case I just order chichirones (awesome), or something I am familiar with from Puerto Rico. Now there are places that a member of any other race doesn't want to wonder in to. Lest you come out in many pieces! However, Cubans hate a dictatorial government like Communist or Nazi. They remember what Castro did to their Country and still is doing.

I got a good chuckle at the back and forth after they got him out of his car. Hill tells them to go be easy, that he just had surgery on his knee. The restraining officer says, "Really, what a coincidence. Did you have surgery on your ears when we told you to put the window down?". That had be rolling 🤣

Hill says he cooperated. What I saw and heard in the video was anything BUT cooperation. I don't blame them for wanting the window down...especially with tinted windows. The stops that police officers get hurt/killed the most on, are common traffic violation stops.

There are lots of examples of police officers acting innappropriately. Youtube is full of cops who apparently don't know the law and act as though they have unquestioned authority.

One good example of this is Scottie Scheffler. That whole interaction was described incorrectly by the officer and had it not been him, he would have ended up in Prison.

So far I am seeing here that Tyreek was in the wrong and it spiraled out of control.

Look, I totally understand why they wanted the window to stay down. There isn't an issue there. But Tyreek cracked the window in order to have a conversation with the cop and tell him why he didn't want the window down. Rather than explain to Tyreek why it needed to stay down the cop got his feelings hurt and went on a power trip.

Tyreek is a turd. He sucks. He had an attitude with the cop. All that can be true but it still also be true that the cop greatly overreacted.

There is a youtube channel I really like called 'Audit the Audit".

It's a really interesting discussion because the argument "he should have complied and it wouldn't have escalated" is often technically true, while at the same time the citizen didn't actually do anything wrong and in fact had every right to refuse to provide ID or answer questions.

One thing that seems really obvious is that most police officers want to have complete control and compliance in any interaction, and that simply is their not right unless they have a valid reason.

That cop over-reacted.

That escalation is why instead of Tyreek, who was in the wrong and acted like a punk, getting bad press and a couple tickets, he is now being treated like the victim.

Now this same cop, interacting with another person at the scene tells him to get back in his car and leave, and within the same sentence says give me your license you're getting a ticket. The guy says I'm leaving. He says no give me your license and already pulls the cuffs out. The other cop tells him to leave and he says 'you're dealing with me now".

This cop needs some de-escalation training and some Xanax.

BINGO. He could've very easily said "sir we can't see through your windows because they're illegally tinted and unless you want to be cuffed outside of the car and also ticketed for the tint you'll keep that window rolled down". At that point if he doesn't comply drag him out and do whatever you want with him. But the cop didn't even attempt to de-escalate. He just turned a normal traffic stop into a reason for black people to scream racism and continue to hate police officers...even though race almost certainly had nothing to do with the interaction as the cops weren't even white...and told Tyreek as much when he tried to play the race card.

Things happen quick and in a hurry, since he had already had the window down, he had no reason to roll it back up and then refuse to roll it back down. That signals that maybe, he has an ulterior motive for wanting to control access, visual or otherwise to his vehicle. I have seen perps try to play the race card on black LEOs, it's their go-to, and it irritates me, especially having just seen why they were being pulled over, most times not even knowing who is driving. I'm sure it happens, for all races, but it should not be your default action when you know you're riding dirty.

Yes, I think the cop could have given Hill a little more chance. In my judgement, the cop got irked and went on a little bit of a power trip. The blame still lies with Hill not complying and trying to test the limits because the cops were not giving unlawful orders.

i can understand why the officer wanted the windows down. as dark as the tint was and the dark interior, the driver could have been getting a gun out. All he had to do was comply, say i'm sorry officer just in a hurry to get to the stadium and bring a win home for the dolphins and he would have probably got a high 5 and a police escort to the stadium

I lived down there for 20 years and have attended a few games at this stadium so I probably have a different perspective. These officers aren't on patrol, they're on a detail for traffic control to and from the stadium. They are there for the team to get players into the building and to keep traffic flowing for tailgaters and fans. The counties, Broward and Miami-Dade work together with the team and stadium. The teams are partners in this enterprise. As a consequence, the players always get special treatment by cops working details at the stadium, and they should under the circumstances. They expect the stadium detail to help get them into the stadium because that's part of their purpose for being there. If players run late, they will stop traffic to let a player through, they don't have to wait in line like everyone else. I can see why Hill would feel like he was being hassled on his way to work by someone who is supposed to be there to get him to his job. Its also interesting that one of the officers that showed up on the scene first asked why they were stopping "him", and don't you know who he is, he's a star player. This guy understood how it works at Dolphins stadium, and every stadium in the country. You get the players in and keep traffic moving.

I don't think that includes the players going 100 mph in that traffic.
