Unexpected pic this afternoon….

I know someone who rescued an evacuated fawn that now thinks it's one of the dogs. Unfortunately it is a buck, so once the thing sprouts antlers, it'll be a danger to people. They put a collar just like that on its neck, but they're in a different part of the state from you, so it's not the same deer.

My buddy's daughter-in-law shot a "pet" buck someone had collared when it was younger. The buck had outgrown the collar, which was cutting into its neck, which was infected, and puss filled. They literally had to peel the collar out of the deer's neck. Deer was skinny and likely would have died from infection and malnutrition soon. Folks who think they are protecting their "tame" friends are condemning them to a certain and untimely death.

In this area, there isnt any reason to collar them. Low hunting pressure ans very selective hunters. Virtually no chance of him being shot as a 1.5 or 2.5 yr old. More risk from the collar itself

That is interesting. Not something I have ever seen here, but did once see a deer with a collar at my wife's grandparents place in the ozarks before.

yes, he is a fisherman and a hunter. he has a lot of pet deer on his place in Oklahoma. He has them all named. they come up on the porch and eat out of his hands.

I saw one on my farm one year as small 4pt with a regular orange dog collar and that was the only sighting of him. Come to find out guy about 3 miles down the road has raised 3-4 throughout the years.
