Looks like Texas and some others are cancelling spring games. Citing "player poaching" as the reason. Not sure what that means exactly.

They see a 2nd or 3rd string player do good in a game situation and then poach them with nil or try to. I would guess many will follow.
They aren't cancelling spring practice, just the spring game. The spring game stuff had gotten pretty lame even before the portal and NIL issues came up. I suspect a spring game will be a rarity within a couple of years. It sucks from the standpoint of the spring game being the only one that a lot of families can afford to take their kids to. But, from the coaches standpoint, they certainly aren't worth a variety of risks.
it's just a glorified practice/scrimmage for the families/fans to the give them something to look forward to in the spring

The spring game is a scrimmage, not a true game, and is often used by coaches to assess their current players, try out new strategies, and see who might step up.
Fans and media should temper their expectations and remember that there's a lot more to a successful football season than a single scrimmage.
I'm afraid both fans and the media have given the games too much assessment as to the teams standing in the spring as to how they will perform in the fall.

This is 2025. You can't hide player performance.
I agree. And i watch a bunch of them just because its football and to see a few of the top recruits. I hate to see them end. And i agree, it seems like it is hard to hide talent in todays time period

I don't know that I agree with that. The spring season is primarily for conditioning, learning plays, and building chemistry among the team. Coaches use this time to evaluate their roster, try different combinations of players, and make adjustments to their game plan.
By the time fall comes around, the players will have had several more months of training, learning, and preparation. They will be physically stronger, mentally sharper, and more in sync with their team.
Not sure they trying to hide anything.
