Wanting a new fish finder need some advice/recommendation

I'm a Garmin guy and it's all I have, so I can only speak for them. Garmin's customer service and tech support is excellent, and every time I call I get an American that speaks English. That's worth a lot to me. I think you will eventually want live imaging. I would definitely get a unit that is compatible with that. Bass Pro has the unit below on a special buy and it would be a good choice. A 9" screen is the minimum I would consider and obviously the bigger the better. They also have a great deal on a 12" unit but it's out of your budget at $1500.

I have this exact setup. It's my first fish finder. I'm very satisfied with it. It was easy to learn how to use. There are several tutorial videos on YouTube if needed.

Lots of great information from you guys. Still looking and rolling over HB vs Garmin features and future growth. budget wise I think I can swing maybe 850-900, I dont have 51% of the vote...yet;) (lol).

I've got 2 like that. They serve me well for striper trolling. I typically only run the down imaging as the lake I fish is deep but the side imaging is nice when fishing shallower water for other fish types.
We need to talk about striper trolling. I would love to get into that. I just haven't found much info that pertains to this area (Chickamauga Lake).

I run Lowrance on both of my boats. I had a Humminbird on a bass boat once. I could never get it to work right. I think it was operator error. But the Humminbird seems to be the favored set up. I would definitely get side scan. On my pontoon I have side and down scan. On the Jon boat I only have down scan. I wish I would have gone with side.

you wont have any future growth with a Helix, or Solix, they are being discontinued. johnson outdoors is slimming up their line and cutting costs due to financial troubles. hopefully the Xplore will bring them out of it. we need them to survive.
