West Tenn turkey population?

BW, unfortunately, if the state said we could kill 100 hens a year there are blood thirsty "hunters" that would try it.

I agree and I know a few people like that, I do try to get a couple every year, and I killed 2 (total) this year out of 2 different flocks a few miles apart in Lewis county but I know the typerson you speak of.

Are you saying you try to kill a couple hens every year? And you killed 2 hens this year? I honestly don't think someone that kills hens has a right to complain about declining populations.

Lol ask me how many hens I've every killed in Lawrence County where there are no turkeys now...

Ask me how many hens I've killed in Lewis and maury.

I don't necessarily hunt hens but I'll take a couple in the fall given an opportunity, I like to fall hunt its exciting. But to think 2 hens out of 60 is killing off the hundreds of birds we had in a 2 year period. No not plausible.

If it were a steady decline I'd agree but hunting is far from any rhyme or reason as to why Lawrence County has no turkey. I think I've killed 1 hen in Lawrence County in 10 years?

Our population didn't decline our population was decimated, and no one knows why.

if all of this is true then why do we still have a 4 gobbler limit in west tn?

Better yet, why do we have hen hunts in the fall???

Agreed! I think this manifest destiny slaughter fest of the wild turkey is nonsense. It tends to take away the sporting side of turkey hunting and those unfortunate enough to get into turkey hunting during the "boom" have unrealistic expectations, however a lot of those folks havent experienced the decline yet.

I remember when it was a good day just to hear a gobble in the distance. A lot of places are still like that. I'll never understand why anyone would ever want to kill a hen, but the state allows it. That is the really stupid part.

Never ever kill hens! Half the turkey populations dies every year! A couple years in a row with a bad hatch is bad enough, but you add on killing the hens, itsCRAZY.

people like that usually don't follow hunting regs anyway. I worked with a guy who had a friend who went with another friend on opening day a couple years ago, and the two of them shot 8 toms all at once. They were younger, maybe younger than me. The kind of people who shoot deer out of their truck.

The fall hen limit of 6 has yet to hurt the birds here in Maury. Flocks all over the woods where I hunt. There are still not many people who even bother fall turkey hunting and I think that helps. I killed 3 hens last fall and could have shot another one, but the 3 were heavy enough to carry out. Kind of wish I had got one more for the meat, but April is not far away.

First, we shouldn't set statewide limits according to one county where population is booming, instead of the dozens and dozens where it is struggling. Second, Maury County is not in West Tennessee, the area this thread was about. Third, there can't be much meat on a wild hen, and I've never eaten a wild turkey that compared to a Butterball anyway.

first, I never suggested statewide limits. Second, you are right that may be a bit off topic but the county was mentioned here already. Third, there is plenty of meat on a hen, and I love to see my family enjoy a dinner I cooked from the breast that I pounded, cut, marinated and grilled. I don't know what they feed those butterball turkeys, but I'm pretty sure the wild ones have a healthier diet. And those hens were delicious, not tough or gamy as some people would think. Try and remember some people enjoy eating the turkeys they kill more than you do.

Here's the goods from this past fall turkey season:

Got anything else to say about how worthless the meat on a hen is?

I never said "worthless", dipshit. I said there couldn't be much meat on a wild hen and I prefer Butterball. EVERYBODY here knows you kill hens. Nobody cares about hearing how many hens you slaughter. We are discussing population decline in WEST Tennessee. Not hen killing in Maury County. Start your own thread or stay on topic.

Haha, this thread declined about as quick as the turkey population!
